Big wins for innovation at UConn! ?? The InnovateHealth PitchFest, hosted on November 20th, brought student ideas to life with $17,000 in prizes on the line. Special shoutout to?Zemi — a previous participant in our 2024 Summer Fellowship Accelerator — for taking the top prize in their category. A huge congratulations goes to Professors Leila Daneshmandi, PhD and Dr. Tiffany Kelley PhD MBA RN NI-BC FNAP, the dynamic duo behind the UConn Nursing and Engineering Innovation Center, for leading this event. ?? Earlier this month, we held the first ever InnovateHealth PitchFest by the UConn School of Nursing and School of Engineering where both University of Connecticut graduate and undergraduate students showcased their health care ideas and solutions. From dental protection and innovative health data tracking devices to smart clothing, these entrepreneurs are turning possibilities into reality. ? Leila Daneshmandi, PhD and Dr. Tiffany Kelley PhD MBA RN NI-BC FNAP hosted the event, powered by Beekley Medical. Eight selected groups of students had three minutes each to pitch their ideas, followed by panel discussion: ? Chromashield (first place winner - undergrad) TransferABLE Flexapy The Healing Power of Movement Dentopa HealthStream AI PillGuard Zemi (first place winner – graduate) ? Each first-place team won $5,000; second place $2,500; third place $1,000. Every group will also receive five hours of expert mentorship for their prototype. For some students, this was their first time presenting outside of the classroom; some only had under 12 weeks to prepare while others are already in further stages of development and testing. ? The four judges in attendance expressed how impressive these presentations were across the board and are eager to follow their journeys from ideation to launch. All were deeply impacted by each group’s dedication to health equity and focus on social determinants of health – to broaden access to health care across racial, gender, and socio-economic divides. ? We look forward to possibly doing this again in the spring!
