September is National Suicide Prevention Month. All month, mental health advocates, prevention organizations, survivors, allies, and community members unite to promote suicide prevention awareness. Suicide is the second leading cause of death among young adults. Suicidal feelings may be triggered by a crisis or the inability to deal with life stressors such as financial problems, a relationship break-up, or chronic pain and illness. We must remember that we never know what internal battles a person may be dealing with, and we urge you to check in on your loved ones regularly. Suicidal thoughts are often the result of feeling alone, so the act of support can save a life. The transition from warrior to civilian can also be especially for veterans, making them more prone to suicidal thoughts than other groups. However, many veterans are overcoming these difficulties with love and support from people close to them. Whether it is by reaching out, raising awareness, or providing resources, working together to help individuals and communities in need can change lives every day.
