Double Jeopardy ??: What happens when a tropical cyclone ?? wipes out power ???—only to be followed by a heatwave ??? The result: thousands left without access to cooling, escalating cases of heat illness, and compounding risks that strain communities and infrastructure. Our latest report explores the hidden dangers of compound heat and flood events and the adaptation strategies that can build resilience against multiple hazards. Key insights include: ?? Multi-hazard risk assessment for better planning and preparedness ?? Nature-based solutions to mitigate both urban flooding and extreme heat ??? Climate-smart urban design, including permeable surfaces and passive cooling retrofits to address both hazards ??? Community engagement and education—because informed action saves lives ?? On March 10th, 2025, we, Practical Action in Bangladesh, proudly observed National Disaster Preparedness Day?in Faridpur district as part of our ongoing efforts to enhance community resilience under the Zurich Climate Resilience Programme. This day is a reminder of the importance of proactive disaster preparedness and response, focusing on building community resilience to better face challenges posed by any natural or man-made hazard. The District Relief and Rehabilitation Office, Faridpur, hosted a discussion session, opened by the Deputy Commissioner of Faridpur as the chief guest and chaired by the Additional Deputy Commissioner General. The event brought together key stakeholders, including the Additional Police Super (special guest), District Relief & Rehabilitation Officer, BFSCD, Red Crescent Society, NGOs, and volunteers. The session highlighted our efforts to enhance disaster preparedness through improved early warning systems, innovative technologies, risk assessment, capacity building, and advocacy for a national roadmap. Key initiatives include the Disaster Alert for BD app, local resilience agent pools, digital weather boards, and a voice messaging system for real-time multi-hazard alerts. Furthermore, in collaboration with the BFSCD, a rally was organized to raise public awareness about fire hazards. A heartfelt thanks to all participants and volunteers for their dedication to strengthening community resilience. Their active engagement underscores the power of collective action in disaster preparedness. Preparedness is the key to protecting communities from the impact of #climate hazards – but in the planning stage, the unique experiences of women and girls are often overlooked. Plan International’s Daniela Donia and Manuel von der Muehlen explain how the Zurich Climate Resilience Alliance’s work in the Philippines offers a more equitable and inclusive – and therefore more effective – approach to climate resilience ??

When it comes to protecting communities from the impacts of climate hazards, preparedness is crucial. However, the experiences of women and girls are often overlooked during the planning stage, despite the fact that their experiences can contribute to building resilience against hazards. Ahead of International Women's Day, Plan International's Daniela Donia and Manuel von der Mühlen explain how the Zurich Climate Resilience Alliance's work in Manila and Navotas offers a more equitable and inclusive approach to climate resilience. #ClimateChange #ThrowBackThuraday At Plan International Nigeria, we believe that building resilience against climate change requires collective action. Under the Zurich Climate Resilience Alliance (ZCRA) project, we organised a five-day capacity-building workshop for climate change champions from Yobe, Adamawa, and Abuja, and unanimously formed the Climate Change Network (CCN). This is in line with the project's objectives of building the resilience of community members to adapt to climate change and strengthening early warning systems in locations of implementation. This powerful network of stakeholders, including media representatives, influencers, and government agencies in attendance, will drive behavioural change, strengthen climate policies, and early warning systems. Fatimah, a member of the CCN from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), said “the workshop provided an avenue for synergy with various stakeholders committed to addressing the challenges of climate change in Nigeria, this synergy will provide more collaborative solutions.” During the workshop, CCN members highlighted the gaps in climate change mitigation and response. They also highlighted the strategies that will be deployed to ensure these gaps are addressed. By the end of the workshop, each stakeholder developed an action plan with timelines for the year 2025. This is a call to action for every sector of the society. Together, through collaboration, innovation, and commitment, we can ensure a sustainable future for generations to come. The time to act is now—because the cost of inaction is far greater,’ said another CCN member, Professor Ambrose Audu Zemba, Professor of Climatology Modibbo Adama University, Yola. #ClimateChange #ClimateReporting #ClimateResilience #ClimateMitigation #ClimateCrisis #ClimateResponse #PlanNigeria #ClimateNigeria #PlanInternational #PlanInternationalNigeria #StandWithGirls #FutureGirlsWant #ThrowBackThursday #TBT

Looking for an opportunity to explore the potential for the Private Sector to support adaptation? We're looking for a climate finance expert ?? The deadline for intent to bid is on Friday 28th February! A detailed Terms of Reference will be shared with applicants by March 3rd. More details here ?? https://lnkd.in/eWEytPdQ
?? Calling Climate Finance Experts! Exciting Consultant Opportunity ?? ? ?? Ever wondered what the role, potential and limits of the private sector is in financing adaptation in developing countries, particularly SIDS and LDCs? The Zurich Climate Resilience Alliance is looking for a consultant to provide quantitative evidence what the current private adaptation finance landscape is and bring in data and facts to an often ideological debate. ? ?? What you'll do: - Quantify what private finance is actually contributing to adaptation in LDCs and SIDS - Assess realistic future scenarios through 2035 ?? Why this matters: With adaptation needs in developing countries estimated at $215-387 billion/year (and only $28 billion currently flowing), understanding the realistic role private finance can play in closing the financing gap is crucial. ?? We need someone who can: - Track current private finance flows across different adaptation sectors - Analyse barriers and opportunities by country type and sector - Deliver clear insights backed by robust methodology ?? Quick details: - Intend to bid by 28th February here: https://lnkd.in/edCKVgFr - Remote position - Key findings needed for SB62 in June Debbie Hillier Barbara Rosen Jacobson Anna Beswick Sally Tyldesley Andrew Duthie #ClimateFinance #Adaptation #ConsultingOpportunity #ClimateResilience #PrivateSector #ClimateJustice
