Our client experienced a 6,600,000 swing in traffic between Google updates. When that first decline happened, it would have been easy to panic. This client didn’t. In fact, they increased budget with us. Yes, there were questions and a higher focus on quality across the site. But the channel was still a massive and positive ROI for them. And they knew, intuitively, that the content they were putting out was extremely high quality independent of how Google was treating it. There wasn’t a sudden change in direction or an attempt to overoptimize everything to recover. They stayed the course, and sure enough the most recent update rocketed them back. As many have said, it is more and more common recently to get improperly stuck on one side of algorithm change even if you have a high quality website. If you stay the course around continuing to improve your website and content, the belief – and historical evidence – shows that Google tends to eventually get it right.

First full week of the new year is full of more search performance and online visibility projects. The fun technical components so far in January have been: 1) Validating a #WordPress redirection script that handles thousands of old product URLs to bring customers to the correct WooCommerce product with fuzzy matching and fallbacks to a relevant category or search for key terms from the URL 2) Tuning an AI assistant app, making significant cost reductions for scaling metadata generation. Current name for this app is: "Fancy Fill-In-the-Blanks and Field Rewrite Tool for CSV Files" or F-FIBARF-TCSVF for short. Primary use case rn is #SEO page titles and meta descriptions. 3) Rigging up generic scraping and user workflow tests to Databox to integrate UX quality metrics with digital presence and CRO analytics

When someone calls, on the phone, ZappyPeople answers. Over the last several weeks we have been getting non-stop calls about how we are not ranking for "voice search". At first, these were disregarded as spam calls, part of the problem with posting a phone number online. After so many attempts, Todd Belcher ??gets curious and had a conversation with an informative representative who finally picked up after confirming by pushing 1 that "yes, we would like to make sure we are listed in Google Voice Search". This time I got someone! So she explains that we have had a hilariously low and likely to be accurate double-digit number of voice searches in the last 30 days and we are not listed on these "voice search platforms". I laughed and asked "and what voice search platforms are these" to which I got a quick and natural "Alexa, Siri, Google, Microsoft, Meta" or something like that. I ask the dealbreaker question: "So what is it that you would want from me to fix this?" A little late for the holiday season, but #ecommerce friends battling 404s might find this redirect script outline useful. If a step matches, we're done. 1?? EARLY EXIT: If the URL does not look like a product or category page (truly unknown), show regular 404 page populated with top sellers 2?? IMMEDIATE CHECK: If URL matches product URL structure, strip to slug, SKU, or whatever is consistent and seek a product match 3?? CATEGORY CHECK: If there was no exact product match, look for matching category (exact then fuzzy) 4?? PRODUCT CHECK: No good category? Maybe there is a similar product -- try to find a match 5?? SEARCH CHECK: Uses words from URL to find products: If one product matches → direct to product If multiple products match → search results page If no matches → show 404 with top sellers
