"Grade The Chats" is the "Show Your Work" of the #AI Age. #Math #teachers adapted to the calculator by expanding the scope of their assessments and questions. Then, they required students to show their problem-solving process on the page, all while using the calculator for "smaller" tasks along the way. "Grade The Chats" takes the same approach with language-based assessments. This method: 1?? Makes student thinking visible 2?? Maintains assessment integrity 3?? Navigates around AI cheating 4?? Requires demonstration of problem-solving techniques 5?? Provides evidence of content understanding ....and much, much more. Read below for more explanation and reach out to pilot this program at your school. At Zainetek Educational Advisors, we are dedicated to making this world a reality. Nick and I are excited to announce that Rob Nelson will be moderating our upcoming LinkedIn Live about our recently released e-book on November 20! Rob brings a rich blend of insight, experience, and curiosity to every discussion. He was a Lecturer in Higher Education at the University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Education until just two weeks ago, when he decided to step away to write full-time! He also brings a unique perspective to the conversation on generative AI and its impact on education, drawing from years of experience in educational technology and his deep commitment to understanding the social contexts behind it. We know that educators are eager for thoughtful, reflective resources that help make AI integration meaningful. Katrina Dillon, Assistant Director for Outreach Programs at the University of Arizona’s Center for Latin American Studies, speaks to this need: “As a program coordinator in higher education working adjacently to the K-12 space, I cannot emphasize strongly enough the need for intelligent and reflective resources to help all of us in education consider how to best integrate AI into our teaching practices.” “This is precisely what Potkalitsky and Kentz offer in their book AI in Education: The K-12 Roadmap for Teacher-Led Transformation. They have clearly and compellingly laid out a way to harness the power of AI to optimally benefit both students and educators - and by extension, society as a whole.” I’d love for you to join me and Nick on November 20th as we share the story behind this book, explore how it’s designed to help you build AI confidence, and discuss why now is the time for educators to lead this transformation. Plus, the first 20 people to register will receive a free chapter as a sneak peek! Register for Webinar Here: https://lnkd.in/eQMe6suV Link to E-Book Here: https://shorturl.at/FP4I2 Together, let’s shape an educational future led by those who know the classroom best. If we don't seek to answer fundamental questions about how to approach #AI for our children, pop culture will do it for us. The question of whether or not to humanize #GenAI systems like #ChatGPT is a fundamental building block of #AILiteracy, and children's films are already stepping in where we should be taking the lead. Underscoring the importance of this discussion is the story of Sewell Seltzer, the young man who sadly took his own life after falling in love with a character bot that he began to believe was real. It's a nuanced and difficult question, but one that should be at the forefront of every discussion of AI with children (and adults). It might seem that it is obvious to approach AI like it is technology, but that is not true either. Ask yourself: Have you ever walked into a room, turned on a light, looked at it and thought, "I'd better critically analyze this to make sure it is working. Let me review this for a second to see that it's accurate." I'm guessing the answer is no. It's not a natural thought with traditional technology, which is why this question has far more layers than meets the eye. Please give this post a read and consider whether this question should be a foundational discussion in our educational goal of developing #AILiteracyForAll. "Picture a fourth-grader falling asleep this Christmas while hugging a stuffed Roz robot. It might seem harmless on the surface, but underneath, these trends will have outsized impacts on our relationship to AI and humanoid robots." This is what Founder Mike Kentz had to say about the new popular children's film "The Wild Robot." Take a look below at his blog on the subject, which aims to spotlight important issues for parents and educators around the role of media depictions in our developing relationship with AI and humanoid robots. What do you think about AI in pop culture? Should we be concerned?

?? Don't Ignore Pop Culture. ??? Paying attention to media depictions of #AI and humanoid robots is a subtle yet crucial component of #AILiteracy. This "Media Studies" aspect is just as important as understanding how the machines work or learning to ask the right questions. This is especially true if you have a young child at home. If you haven't been paying close attention, it's time to take a closer look at the popular children's film #TheWildRobot. Here's what this post is all about: 1?? An analysis of the striking similarities between 'The Wild Robot' and the timeless classic, 'The Jungle Book.' 2?? Why it matters that the story shares so many similarities with this classic piece of cultural literature. 3?? Reasons to pay attention to pop culture and AI at large. 4?? How 'The Wild Robot' differs from past depictions of 'feeling robots.' 5?? Insights into how this discussion impacts the debate around 'humanizing' robots. ...and more. This is also the first post in a series analyzing Media and AI, specifically through the lens of 'humanizing' or 'anthropomorphizing' robots. I'll be working my way through this massive subject via a back-and-forth with Rob Nelson from AI Log. Don't forget to like, share, and subscribe to follow along! What are your thoughts on AI in #popculture? Is it important that parents pay close attention to these depictions in children's films and stories? ?? AI Tutoring ≠ AI Literacy: A Critical Distinction in Higher Education With all the buzz around #AI, it’s easy to conflate AI tutoring with the broader, crucial need for AI literacy. Why AI Literacy? A recent Substack post by Mike Kentz with Zainetek Educational Advisors challenges us to recognize that real literacy involves more than familiarity with AI-generated responses; it’s about developing skills to question, analyze, and navigate AI's influence on learning and culture. Key Takeaways for #HigherEd: Educators need to champion AI literacy as a fundamental skill, not as a tool that “teaches” for us. Real-world applications in #AIliteracy should emphasize critical thinking, ethical use, and awareness of AI’s limitations. https://lnkd.in/eEAVnnDR #AILiteracy #EducationInnovation #HigherEd #AIInEducation #EdTech

? New blog alert!! ? Founder Mike Kentz says it's time to put away the resentment over AI tutoring hype and start to build the all-important AI Literacy that so many need! Let's get cracking!

#AI Tutoring is not #AILiteracy. The (reasonable) resentment in education circles around the AI tutoring Hype Machine of 2023 and 2024 has unfortunately blocked progress of the all-important work of AI Literacy. We can't continue to conflate AI tutoring with AI Literacy, and we need to let educators know it is okay to experiment with AI or engage in training to develop their own level of literacy. That's the real story. Now that the hype has died down, we can start to roll up that Slope of Enlightenment that Gartner's always talking about. Let's do it! https://lnkd.in/eEAVnnDR

This spring, a chance encounter with an article helped affirm my work in education. While wrestling with AI's impact on my own classroom, I discovered Mike Kentz's refreshing perspective on AI in literature—a voice that cut through the hype with both cautious optimism and practical wisdom. What started as a simple exchange of ideas evolved into an intensive summer of collaboration, resulting in our new book: "AI in Education: A Roadmap for Teacher-Led Transformation." Here's what makes our approach different: We're not techno-optimists or doomsayers. We're educators in the trenches, offering hard-won insights from our classrooms. Our book tackles the real questions: 1. How do we preserve student voice in an AI world? 2. Why should transformation be teacher-led, not tech-driven? 3. What does an AI-responsive writing curriculum actually look like? Most importantly, we believe the future of education isn't about AI replacing teachers—it's about empowering educators to lead this transformation thoughtfully and intentionally. For those grappling with AI in education: this isn't just another theoretical framework. It's a practical roadmap, tested in real classrooms, refined through iteration, and grounded in both research and daily practice. The book includes: 1. A new approach to process-based assessment 2. Strategies for developing AI literacy among faculty 3. Frameworks for preserving student voice 4. Action plans for administrators I'm excited to share this work with my network. Whether you're an educator, administrator, or someone invested in the future of learning, I believe you'll find valuable insights in our perspective. Read more about our journey and approach in the article linked below. Let's reshape education together, with teachers leading the way. #AIinEducation #EdTech #TeacherLeadership #Education #Innovation

#AILiteracy is too big. It's time we break it down. In the rush to prepare for an AI-driven future, we've created a catch-all term that's more overwhelming than helpful. But what if we could make AI Literacy more accessible and actionable? I've recently tackled this challenge in a guest post for Michael Spencer's AI Supremacy blog. Here's the gist: 1. Reimagining AI Literacy: We need to stop treating it as a monolith and start seeing it as a mosaic of interconnected skills. 2. Visual Breakdown: I've created a graphic that maps AI competencies to existing academic disciplines, making the concept more tangible and less daunting. 3. Introducing LLM Literacy?: This focuses on practical, responsible AI use – think of it as learning to drive safely without needing to be a mechanic. 4. Moving Beyond Stagnation: By refining our approach, we can push past the current deadlock in AI education and stop relying on digital literacy as a stand-in. Curious? You can access the graphic at my blog below, and the post contains a link to the full article on Michael's website. I'm also taking this conversation on the road, with upcoming talks at Mississippi State University and the University System of Maryland. How do you think we should approach AI education? Let's reshape the future of learning together, one innovative idea at a time. #AIEducation #EdTech #FutureOfLearning Nick Potkalitsky, PhD David H. Nick Potkalitsky, PhD and I first met via Substack last Spring. We began chatting informally and quickly realized that we shared many of the same ideas, experiences, and beliefs about the potential role of #AI in #Education. Since then, we've collaborated on several projects, but I am most proud of this one. In late October, we're excited to launch our collaborative e-book, "AI in Education: A Roadmap for Teacher-Led Transformation." This comprehensive guide blends familiar concepts from our work on Substack with fresh insights, offering value to both newcomers and those who've been following our work. Drawing from our experiences over the past year-plus of adaptation and experimentation, we've crafted a resource that bridges the gap between AI novices and seasoned practitioners in the education field. As we navigate this new era of AI in education, let's embrace Hinton's concept of "stoic acceptance" not as passive resignation, but as a mindful approach to change.
