If we don't seek to answer fundamental questions about how to approach #AI for our children, pop culture will do it for us. The question of whether or not to humanize #GenAI systems like #ChatGPT is a fundamental building block of #AILiteracy, and children's films are already stepping in where we should be taking the lead. Underscoring the importance of this discussion is the story of Sewell Seltzer, the young man who sadly took his own life after falling in love with a character bot that he began to believe was real. It's a nuanced and difficult question, but one that should be at the forefront of every discussion of AI with children (and adults). It might seem that it is obvious to approach AI like it is technology, but that is not true either. Ask yourself: Have you ever walked into a room, turned on a light, looked at it and thought, "I'd better critically analyze this to make sure it is working. Let me review this for a second to see that it's accurate." I'm guessing the answer is no. It's not a natural thought with traditional technology, which is why this question has far more layers than meets the eye.
