Helen Rodríguez-Trías was a trailblazing Puerto Rican physician and public health advocate who dedicated her life to fighting for women’s reproductive rights. As the first Latina president of the American Public Health Association, she worked tirelessly to expand access to quality healthcare for women and children, while also leading the charge to abolish forced sterilization. Her impact extended beyond healthcare—Rodríguez-Trías was a fierce advocate for AIDS awareness and public health equity. In 2001, her lifelong commitment was recognized with the Presidential Citizen’s Medal.
