关于我们

YWCA Brooklyn is a unique, non-sectarian organization dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all. For over 130 years, we have been at the forefront of struggles for social justice and gender equality and continue our work to advance the lives of low-income women and girls in Brooklyn. YWCA Brooklyn offers a safe haven to survivors of domestic violence, opportunity for teens and immigrant women, and a hub for advocacy and community action. We work daily to level the playing field and truly empower women and girls of color. In 1890, we founded the first public nursing school in the country, providing a path for women to fulfilling and economically secure careers in nursing. We trained women to work in non-traditional jobs at the Brooklyn Navy Yard during World War I and provided housing for thousands of immigrant women arriving through Ellis Island in the early 20th Century. 1n 1943, YWCA Brooklyn became the first YWCA in the country to racially integrate its programs, residences and pool. In 1971, recognizing the special challenges faced by low-income women and girls of color, we pioneered one of the nation’s first centers for women in crisis. We went on to launch programs for survivors of domestic violence and to found a child development center. In 1994, YWCA Brooklyn established award-winning women’s health programs. In recent years, we fought against development pressures to save our iconic downtown Brooklyn building for the benefit of the local community. Today the building provides space for more than 300 safe, permanent and affordable homes for low-income women, many who were previously homeless or experienced gender-based violence, a Social Justice Community Center and office and meeting space for Brooklyn non-profit and civic organizations.

  • At YWCA Brooklyn we’re celebrating #BlackHistoryInTheMaking by sharing the stories of our friends and partners who are doing the work that will create a ripple effect across our community for generations. Get to know New York City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams, the first Black woman elected into the position. Her highly visible leadership role is an inspiration to young women all across the city. She has also prioritized support for YWCA Brooklyn’s young women’s initiatives through our YW LEAD program that serves promising young women of color in securing educational opportunities and economic equity that they have historically been excluded from having access to. She sets a great example for young women and provides lasting motivation to our young LEADers as they map out their educational goals. #BlackHistoryMonth #YWCAbklyn #OnAMission

At YWCA Brooklyn we’re celebrating #BlackHistoryInTheMaking by sharing the stories of our friends and partners who are doing the work that will create a ripple effect across our community for generations. Get to know YWCA Brooklyn Board Chair Dr. Betty Boyle Duke as she shares with us how she hopes her work will impact girls in NYC: “I want to take a moment to reflect on the timeless wisdom of Shirley Chisholm: 'Service is the rent we pay to live on this earth.' These words deeply resonate with me, especially as we honor the legacy of Black servant leaders whose tireless efforts have paved the way for gender and racial equality. I am proud to serve on the board of the YWCA Brooklyn, an organization with over 130 years of history empowering women and girls of color to realize their full potential. Their stories—rooted in resilience and progress—are interwoven with my own journey as a first-generation college graduate and the child of Haitian immigrants who went on to become a leader in healthcare. Together, these narratives form a powerful tapestry that celebrates the richness and strength of Black history. As I continue this vital work in the community I love, I am reminded that "progress is a collective effort and that every challenge we face is an opportunity to rise stronger, united in purpose and determination. I hope to continue collaborating with the YWCA Brooklyn and our partners to build a powerful force for meaningful and lasting change for women and girls living in NYC. Together, we are unstoppable!” #BlackHistoryMonth #OnAMission #YWCAbklyn
