While traveling internationally this month , the “Diplomat” has come up in several conversations, given the state of our politics around the world. The Diplomat https://g.co/kgs/GupQPbd Earlier this year, I was honored to be invited to join the US State Department’s Delegation POD for Deep Tech & AI with the UK. This Partnership Opportunity Delegation (POD) to London, United Kingdom, explores the theme of “Deep Tech Inclusion” to create business-government and business-business partnerships. It was an honor to represent the United States in this delegation, with my colleagues from the most innovative companies and leaders of Deep Tech Quantum, AI, and Synthetic Biology startup and investment from the US, while collaborating with our counterparts in the UK (techUK Imperial College London, University of Oxford EY London and more). I was also honored to speak on a panel at the JCM (Joint Committee Meeting between the US and UK on Science and Technology) to discuss how we best support R&D at a higher scale and scaling up of emerging tech businesses & funding. There’s been much talk lately where people feel frustrated and are extremely judgmental of our incredible public servants in government. I come from the startup and tech world where I started in Silicon Valley and my main home base is in Seattle (2 of the top 5 global tech hubs), where we move at the speed of light, so I get why we are frustrated by the perceived lack of rapid progress. Yet I wonder if we really understand the history and potential for public and private cooperation? I’ve been blessed to work across six continents in business and tech, participated in UN and Congressional events, and I have to say, hands down, this was the best experience I’ve seen to empower public and private collaboration - and it all comes down to the leadership driving this new initiative. Actually spending time with leaders like Special Representative Dorothy McAuliffe for Global Partnerships, meeting with Ambassador Jane Hartley (our real life US ambassador & “diplomat” to the UK) at Winfield House in London, Amal Moussaoui as economics officer in Science & Technology Cooperation office, Dr. Patricia Gruber Science and Tech Advisor to Secretary of State, Celia Merzbacher (ED Quantum Economic Development), (Hal Constantine Regional Tech Officer US Embassy London, Jason Haserodt, Spencer Bailey ) who helped curate phenomenal meetings, bridge business, startup, and investment, where we continue to see rapid movement and progress months later, gives me hope for a new day and potential for public and private collaboration for the future of startup, entrepreneurship, innovation, and investment.
