Happy Black History Month! We kicked off the month with a week of celebrations, starting with spirit dress-up days—can you spot Melanin Monday, Career Day Tuesday, Culture Wednesday, College Day Thursday, and Black Panther Party Friday? Our assemblies explored the significance of Black History Month and why it matters to all of us. We were honored to welcome Black professionals (including our very own amazing parents)—doctors, therapists, directors, and artists—who inspired our students by sharing their journeys and careers. These celebrations have deepened our students’ understanding and appreciation of Black history, culture, and achievements. Join us in welcoming our newest board member, David Stinfil! David serves as Managing Director and Head of the Oakland office at Siebert Williams Shank, an investment bank. He has served as lead manager for over $25 billion of financings across the country and has particular expertise in infrastructure related transactions. In addition to serving on Yu Ming Charter School’s Board, he currently serves as Chair of the Finance Council for the Board of KIPP Public Schools Northern California. David is also the past Chair of the Finance Committee for the Board of the Alameda Health System Foundation. Our students did an incredible job, bringing the spirit of this cultural holiday to life for our families and community. Yu Ming was named the?#1?Charter Elementary School in California and?#7?statewide by U.S. News & World Report 2024, with student test scores 2–3 times higher than state averages. ?? Yu Ming opened its doors to over 90 visitors, including educators, elected officials, and community leaders curious to see and learn from our model in action. ?? As we prepare to launch Yu Ming’s Transitional Kindergarten in 2025, we’re proud to offer a 60% lottery preference for students eligible for Free or Reduced-Price Meals. ?? Our ‘20 graduates joined their '19 peers in college this year—40% are now in California public universities, 20% out of state, 8% in community colleges, and 11% in Ivy Leagues. ?? With input from over 1,000 constituents, Yu Ming’s strategic planning is underway, with working groups set to shape the next five years—strengthening academic excellence while deepening our culture of joy and belonging.

Yu Ming’s WinterFest was an amazing celebration of talent and community! Our students captivated the audience with a variety of performances, ranging from holiday songs and dances to festive band music. The event filled the room with holiday spirit and was a wonderful way to close out the year. A special shout-out to ACBOE Trustee Aisha Knowles and Trustee Angela K. Normand, and OUSD District 3 Director VanCedric Williams for celebrating with our community. During We Love Reading Month/Read-A-Thon, students were inspired to nurture a lifelong passion for the enchanting world of books. As part of the festivities, Author Maha Kadafour visited our Chestnut and Carolyn campuses to share her wonderful book, Koala's Gift of Calm, with the Yu Ming Dragons. This engaging story turns understanding emotions into an exciting adventure—perfect for parents looking to support their children’s emotional intelligence.
