Today, staff at the Elders Home celebrated being recognized with an Alaska Nursing Home Quality Achievement Award by the Mountain Pacific Quality Improvement Organization for their ongoing efforts to provide excellent care to their elder residents. Yukon-Kuskokwim Elders Home was one of only six nursing homes that received this award. Some of the criteria to determine the awards were quality measures, resident vaccine rates and overall star rating. YKHC offers job opportunities across the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta, an expansive area in southwest Alaska that covers 75,000 square miles. The region is home to thousands of lakes and two primary rivers—the Kuskokwim and Yukon. About 28,000 people live in the region in more than 50 rural communities. Most villages range in size from 25 to over 1,000 persons. Bethel, the location of the regional hospital, has a population of nearly 7,000. None of the region’s communities are connected by road (with the exception of one road that connects two communities in the northern part of the region.) Small aircraft are the primary mode of transportation within the region. During the winter, people travel between communities via snowmachine or drive on the ice road on the frozen rivers. 2023 was a busy year at YKHC! Together with tribes, we arranged for providers to spend more than 1,500 days in village clinics, increased childhood immunization rates by 10%, saw an average of 100 customers a day in our outpatient clinic, enrolled nearly 500 people in smoking cessation programs, welcomed 328 babies, and much more.
