This is a good article in Forbes about tipping behaviors and incentives by Timothy Kundro, however, there are a few more aspects to digital tipping that should be mentioned: 1. Default tipping options do indeed influence tipping size, but they also serve a helpful purpose - they provide a target for individuals who do not already have a sense for how much to tip. This is especially relevant for hotel housekeeping tips, and also for tourists who are not accustomed to tipping in the USA. 2. Digital tipping facilitates a more efficient gratuity system because cash tipping is inherently restrictive. A digital tip is not restricted by the amount or denomination of cash carried on one's person. A person carrying only a five-dollar bill, who also carries a smart phone, is able to appropriately tip $7 rather than $5 plus an apology. Defaults and imagined social pressure may not be the only factors influencing the overall increase in tipping.
