Protecting the lungs of the planet Today in La Paz, I met with inspiring young climate leaders working on various environmental challenges. Of particular urgency is Bolivia's Amazon rainforest crisis, often called Earth's lungs for its crucial role in absorbing carbon dioxide and producing oxygen. Over 10 million hectares burned in 2024, marking the country's worst fire season on record. This devastation stems largely from expanding soy production for livestock feed, driven by shifting global trade patterns after the Ukraine war and rising meat demand. In Santa Cruz, where slash-burn agriculture dominates, air quality has plummeted to among the world's worst levels. With 60% of Bolivia covered by Amazon rainforest, this crisis has both local and global implications. These youth leaders demonstrate remarkable ability to transcend traditional constraints. Unlike politicians bound by election cycles and short-term pledges, they work across boundaries, recognizing that effective climate action demands sustained global collaboration. Their borderless perspective is apt for tackling a crisis that knows no national boundaries. My presence sparked interesting conversations about global identity and climate action. It reinforced what these youth already understand: addressing climate change requires us to think beyond traditional borders and develop a global mindset. This April, we'll bring diverse Bolivian voices to the Global Youth Climate Summit in Brazil. Their conviction is clear: long-term planetary health cannot be sacrificed for short-term gains. Through their varied approaches to climate action, they're pioneering solutions that transcend political terms and national interests. • GYLC CEO’s response to U.S. withdrawal from Paris Agreement

    查看Ejaj Ahmad ????????的档案

Founder, Global Youth Leadership Center & Bangladesh Youth Leadership Center

What does President Trump's Paris Agreement withdrawal mean for global climate action? The global climate landscape faces a critical shift as President Trump, hours after his second-term inauguration, signed an executive order withdrawing the U.S. from the Paris Agreement. Unlike the 2017 withdrawal with its four-year delay period, the current framework only requires a 12-month notice. This accelerated timeline presents immediate challenges, especially for climate-vulnerable Global South countries like Bangladesh who are already bearing the brunt of climate impacts. For the U.S., this represents a fundamental restructuring of climate engagement. Beyond domestic policy rollbacks, the most concerning impact will be on climate finance. At COP29 in Baku, developing nations received pledges of only $300 billion annually, far below what's needed. A U.S. withdrawal will widen this climate finance gap, leaving vulnerable countries with even fewer resources to adapt and build resilience. At the Global Youth Leadership Center (GYLC), we witness firsthand how these funding shortfalls directly impact youth-led climate initiatives in vulnerable countries. While the EU and China may step up their leadership, the void in climate finance and support for the Global South creates an unprecedented challenge. To our community of climate champions and young leaders, particularly those in climate-vulnerable regions: This is not the time to lose hope, it's time to double down. Through our work with youth leaders across the Global South, we've seen how resilient and innovative young people are in facing environmental challenges, even with limited resources. We must strengthen South-South cooperation, amplify Global South voices in climate negotiations, and build more robust networks for climate action that can withstand political headwinds. The fight for climate justice continues, and our collective determination must grow stronger. To make progress and amplify youth voices, we're hosting the Global Youth Climate Summit in April 2025 in Brazil to shape the youth agenda for COP30. Let's stay focused, work with science, and explore how we can support youth-led climate initiatives in the Global South, where climate action is not just about policy, it's about survival. #climateaccountability #followthescience #sciencematters #climateaction #youthleadership #GYCS2025 photo credit: Hasan Ali
