Our mission is to break cycles of incarceration and build a more equitable justice system. 关于我们
Youth Justice Network was founded in 1990, at the alternative high school on Rikers Island, to address the disproportionate incarceration of young people of color and support them as they returned home. YJN’s mission is to break cycles of incarceration and build a more equitable justice system. For more than 30 years, YJN has supported young people whose lives intersect with NYC jails and justice systems by providing them with individualized advocacy, mentorship, and opportunities to grow, thrive, and lead.

“'Prison is not even a place for adults to be. That’s the last place for a child to be,' said Williams....She said she hopes the bill [YJ&O] would give young people who get into trouble a chance to grow up, change their ways and become respected — not feared or looked down upon — by older adults." ?? Last week, Brooklyn Org fund holders heard directly from local nonprofit leaders about their work to advance justice reform in our communities. Our partners shared insights on the underlying causes, challenges, and workable solutions for a range of issues related to the criminal justice system, with the discussion touching on court involved youth, and the wrongfully convicted. Panelists included Just Brooklyn Prize winner Derrick Hamilton of Families and Friends of the Wrongfully Convicted, Chris Pahigian of Youth Justice Network, Michael Pope of Youth Represent, and Jessica Yager of Red Hook Community Justice Center, with the conversation moderated by our own COFO, Nicole G. Epps. Brooklyn Org is proud to be your partner to give back. Discover ways to support the causes and communities you care about on your block and across the borough at brooklyn.org/funds. Youth Justice Network joined state leaders at the Javits Center to support the signing of important bills that will strengthen New York's gun laws. This new legislation will provide New Yorkers with essential tools and resources to combat gun violence and improve community safety. We were honored that our Policy and Planning Associate, Patrick Edge, had the privilege to meet Governor Kathy Hochul and share his story.

It was powerful to join Youth Justice Network and Avenues for Justice, Inc., which are working to strengthen community over criminalization for young people, hearing from their members about their concerns and questions for the city's future. Youth matter in creating a just vision for NYC.
