2024 YiF in Review ?? Did you know YiF started as a volunteer-run program 30 summers ago? We started with only 14 students for a 2-week summer camp, and now we’re a year-long program serving over 450 students! At Youth in Focus, we create space for young artists to discover, experiment, and grow their creative passions. From the darkroom to the digital lab, every day, we witness moments of artistic breakthrough.? Our students explore everything from black and white film to digital design, finding their unique voice along the way. Each discovery builds confidence that extends far beyond photography. Listen to our students share their journeys: 'I thought I wasn't that good at film photography... but then teachers in other classes were like 'oh you're really good.'' - Alani 'I've always been into graphic design, and ever since I got into photography, I've never realized how much both things can connect.' - Near For 30 years, we've been building this creative community in Seattle. At Youth in Focus, we believe every young person deserves the opportunity to create. For students like Ethan, access to photography isn’t just about learning how to use a camera—it’s about discovering a voice, building confidence, and finding a community. “Youth in Focus paved the way for me to take that first step into trying photography. Before starting the Creative Career Cohort, I knew nothing about a camera except that it took photos, but during my time there, I learned a lot. I was able to learn about all the different attributes of photos and even was able to visit one of Nordstrom’s photography studios! If that wasn’t enough, they even gave me a slightly used Rebel T3 to continue my photography journey while hiring me as a photographer for some events later on! I’m very thankful for all the opportunities Youth in Focus provided me, and I’m grateful that I can give input on future classes by being on the Youth Advisory Board!” Ethan’s story highlights what makes Youth in Focus unique: we provide access to the arts for over 450 young people every year through free programming, loaned equipment, and mentorship.
