Thrilled to see the successful launch of a brand new initiative, Ecocide Law Advisory, along with the publication of the new Manual on the National Criminalisation of Ecocide in The Hague! Learn more & download the manual HERE: https://lnkd.in/dqVy-v9P Ecocide Law Advisory is a collaboration between @uclapromiseeurope and Climate Counsel, which is also providing tailored advice and training on drafting and implementing #ecocidelaw to stakeholders across the world. The Manual on the National Criminalisation of Ecocide is the product of a working group initiated and chaired by former Dutch parliamentarian @LammertVanRaan and Sjoerd Lopik of @DeRoos.EU. It provides guidance on implementing the #EU’s ???? recently revised Environmental Crime Directive, which requires that member states criminalise cases that can be ‘comparable to ecocide’. The event saw contributions from distinguished panelists including @LammertVanRaan, MEP Marie Toussaint (@marie_touss1), judge and professor Fausto Pocar, and @IngeboorgKoopmans, prosecutor for environmental crimes at the Functional Department of the Dutch Prosecutor’s Office. The law is a reflection of our values” At the 23rd Assembly of States Parties to the Rome Statute of the @InternationalCriminalCourt, Debbie Buyaki, Co-Lead for @EcocideLaw.Youth, called on states to support the codification of #ecocide (mass harm to nature) as the fifth international crime. She argued that the law mirrors and reflects what we want to “protect, preserve and even regenerate”. A new standalone, international crime of #ecocide would reflect the value of our natural environment and a commitment to protecting it, paving the way for the safeguarding of earth’s ecosystems and all of us who rely on them for our health and prosperity. “How can we fix the planet, if the opposite - destroying it - is not wrong?” ?? Debbie Buyaki, Co-Lead for @EcocideLaw.Youth made a moving call to introduce an international crime of #ecocide at an official side event to the 23rd Assembly of States Parties to the Rome Statute of the @InternationalCriminalCourt. She argued that accountability for the mass destruction of nature was severely lacking and that world leaders must heed the call of youth globally to protect their generation from experiencing further ecological catastrophe. Ecocidelaw, she said, would be “a guardrail on how far we can go with killing our only known home”. Ecocide refers to the MOST severe forms of environmental destruction.Currently, top-level decision-makers in governments and corporations are NOT held legally accountable when it is found that their decisions have led to ecocide.
