Opening doors to mental healthcare so people can cope, heal, and thrive.

关于我们

At Youth & Family Counseling (YFC), we believe everyone should have access to mental health counseling when they need it. Opening doors to mental healthcare so people can cope, heal and thrive is our mission. YFC is a community-based outpatient counseling center. Our licensed therapists work with children, teens and adults on a wide range of mental health concerns including: depression, anxiety, grief and loss, abuse, neglect, trauma, low self-esteem, social adjustment issues, difficult life transitions, relationship problems, LGBTQ issues, bullying, ADHD, and more. As a nonprofit organization, YFC depends on community support to fund our need-based fee subsidies, which allow us to serve low-income, under-insured families, as well as those who are well-insured. We are proud of our co-locations with service providers in under-served parts of Lake County (Illinois), and we are grateful to our funding partners for making this work possible. Together, we are improving access to mental health services in our community.

Executive Director, Youth & Family Counseling | Increasing access to mental health services treatment in Chicagoland’s Lake County | Passionate about developing the behavioral health workforce of the future

At Youth & Family Counseling (YFC), we strive to be more than just a provider of mental healthcare services—we aim to be an agent of change in our community. Our vision is a mental healthcare ecosystem where everyone who needs help can access it. Lake County is home to diverse communities, and to truly serve our clients, we ensure our offices in Libertyville, Gurnee, and Round Lake Beach reflect the unique characteristics and values of the people who live there. That’s where our Community Advisory Councils (CACs) come in. Each CAC is made up of local residents and professionals who help us understand community strengths, challenges, and needs—while also connecting us with individuals who need care. As we navigate the challenges of 2025, we’re leaning on our CACs more than ever to ensure YFC remains a trusted resource for individuals and families seeking support. ?? If you have experience navigating—or helping someone navigate—a mental health diagnosis and want to improve access to care, we invite you to join a CAC. ?? Our quarterly meetings (March, June, September, December) offer in-person and remote options, opportunities to network, and access to sector updates. March meetings are scheduled for March 11, 12, and 13. ?? Interested? Message me for details on how to get involved. Together, we can transform mental healthcare access in our community! #MentalHealthMatters #CommunityImpact #AccessToCare #NonprofitLeadership #BehavioralHealth #LakeCountyIL #YFC

Since its founding in 1962, YFC has been a teaching institution.?For many years, internships at nonprofits like YFC were the only choice for students enrolled in clinical master’s programs.?In our post-COVID world, however, there are many internship settings that are open to students, including private practices and schools. In this competitive market, YFC is proud to still be a top choice for today’s counseling and social work students.?This is because of the high level of support that we offer to all our clinicians, including our interns.?They receive individual and group supervision, participate in clinical consult groups, and receive agency-wide trainings. It’s also because our diverse client base provides a plethora of learning opportunities.?Since YFC provides services to clients across the life span and from all walks of life, our students can experience what it’s like to work with children and adolescents, seniors, and couples.?They also learn documentation and coding protocols for both commercial insurance and Medicaid. This is challenging work – our interns must quickly develop strong therapeutic alliance skills to engage with their clients.?And like children who grow up in bilingual households, fluency takes a bit longer.?But by the time our interns graduate, they are ready to soar and carry with them skills that will help them thrive as clinicians no matter where they land. YFC is proud to offer our rich clinical internship experience to 6 masters level students in 2025-2026.?If you are interested in applying for one of these spots, you may apply here: https://lnkd.in/g4VqAPvA Preparing the next generation of therapists to work in community heath is important if we are going to address the mental health epidemic together.??

A huge thank you to #AudreyGrunst, LCSW for sharing her incredible career journey in psychology and social work with the participants of YFC’s Explorers Program! Audrey walked us through her educational path, from earning her Master’s degree at Loyola Chicago to her internship at Lurie Children's Hospital. She shared valuable insights into her early career, working with adolescents in various settings, before stepping into leadership roles in residential care and intensive outpatient programs. In 2016, Audrey took the leap to establish Simply Bee, a private practice specializing in eating disorders and athletes. She highlighted its growth, the services they now offer—including outpatient and intensive programs—and the realities of working in the mental health field. One key takeaway? The challenges and rewards of this profession, including the urgent need for more professionals and the importance of maintaining work-life balance. Our students especially appreciated her actionable advice on preparing for a future in behavioral health, from applying for scholarships to engaging in mental health advocacy and attending Teen Mental Health First Aid programs. Thank you again, Audrey, for your time, wisdom, and dedication to the field! #MentalHealth #Psychology #CareerJourney #SocialWork #Leadership #FutureLeaders #YFCExplorers #SimplyBee

  • ? Mental Health is a Right, Not a Privilege ? At Youth & Family Counseling (YFC), we believe that access to mental healthcare should be a basic right, not a luxury. As a nonprofit leader, I have mixed feelings about #GivingTuesday. On this day, nonprofits like Youth & Family Counseling (YFC) in Lake County, Illinois, aim to inspire communities to give generously. But instead of offering doorbuster deals and steep discounts (therapy flash sale, anyone?), we’re offering opportunities to create lasting impact. ?? Counseling saves lives. By expanding access to mental healthcare for low-income and historically marginalized populations, YFC donors are fostering safe, thriving communities. ?? In Illinois, the behavioral health workforce can meet just 24% of the demand. By helping rebuild the therapist pipeline, YFC donors are ensuring the system can grow to meet these needs for years to come. ?? The mental healthcare system is complex and fragmented. But by establishing clear pathways to treatment and educating referring professionals, YFC donors are making sure there is no wrong door when it comes to care. YFC’s donor community is a small but powerful group of individuals working to transform mental healthcare in our community. Our mission only advances thanks to the support of our donors, and we’re looking for new investors to join us in this important work. If you feel inspired by these opportunities to make an impact, please consider making a gift to YFC today. Your contribution can make a real difference! Still need some extra motivation? Here's an incentive – all new and increased gifts to YFC before December 24th will be matched 2:1! Click below to donate now. Not sure you have the funds after Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday? Don’t worry—unlike other holiday deals being advertised, our opportunity to make a lasting impact on mental healthcare will never expire. YFC will continue to provide chances to invest in our community until mental healthcare is accessible to everyone who needs it. https://lnkd.in/gHv6dcg5 #GivingTuesday #CounselingForAll #Youth&FamilyCounseling #DonorImpact

  • As the mental health crisis continues to impact so many, YFC is stepping up in new and impactful ways – and donor partnerships play a pivotal role in this. Because of donor generosity, YFC has grown by 15% this year, allowing us to expand our services and make a greater impact. Here’s how philanthropic support is transforming lives through YFC: ?? Hiring More Therapists: Donor gifts helped us hire 9 new therapists, and we’re now fully staffed, providing over 15,000 counseling sessions annually! ?? Improved Efficiency: With donor support, we added a small team dedicated to scheduling and onboarding, freeing our clinicians to focus on providing care. This team has conducted over 300 assessments and responded to nearly 800 service requests. ?? Expanding Our Internship Program: We’re increasing our efforts to build the next generation of therapists, helping to address the workforce shortage exacerbated by COVID and the “Great Resignation.” ?? Launching the Explorer Program: Thanks to donor partnerships, we’ve introduced a speaker series to inspire high school students to pursue careers in behavioral health. 78 students are enrolled! ?? Outreach & Engagement: We’ve dedicated a full-time staff member to community outreach, building connections and growing our network to 600 professional contacts. This work helps us better serve the unique needs of each community. None of this would have been possible without donor support. Our entire community changes when donors invest with us in order to break down the barriers to mental healthcare.?But our mission advances only as donor investments allow. As we gear up for #GivingTuesday, YFC is looking for new partners who are aligned with our mission and seeking to have an impact on their community through philanthropy. DM us if you are interested in learning more about how donor investments help us build strong individuals, resilient families, and thriving communities. #MentalHealthMatters #CommunityImpact #NonprofitWork #Therapists #YFC #MentalHealthSupport
