关于我们
Our mission is to elevate teen voices to create real change. Through the power of true stories, written by youth who have been systemically marginalized, we create more supportive and successful learning communities. Since 1980, Youth Communication has worked with youth facing systemic challenges–including youth of color, LGBTQ+ youth, and youth who are recent immigrants, living in foster care, unhoused, and economically struggling– to tell stories that support their peers and help adult professionals provide more equitable and effective services. We run an award-winning writing program, in which NYC teens work one-on-one with professional editors to write true stories about their lives for the benefit of helping other young people navigate similar challenges. We leverage the stories of young people to create change through our education program, providing teachers, after- school workers, and other youth-serving adults. with culturally responsive, social and emotional learning programs. By centering youth voice, these programs engage students, inspire their confidence and feelings of self-worth, and show teachers and other adults who's in their classrooms.

Thank you for sharing this incredible moment from your journey! ?? We are so proud to have played a part in your story and to have inspired your passion for journalism. Your achievements are a testament to the power of youth voices and the impact they can have on the world. Keep shining and inspiring the next generation!
Blast from the past! I interviewed Archbishop Desmond Tutu of South Africa when I was a senior in high school. Someone sent me the clip a couple of years ago and I just stumbled across it again. So funny to see my so-much-younger self! (That hair!) And so wonderful to hear the great man again. Of course, I had no idea then that I'd go on to become the first Black Johannesburg bureau chief for the New York Times. Isn't life something? I owe so much to Youth Communication which introduced me to journalism and opened the door to this interview and so many amazing opportunities, the first footsteps in my career.

We were so thrilled to represent Youth Communication at the Building Bridges to Opportunity presentation hosted by the Office of Student Pathways at the NYC Department of Education (NYCPS). We connected with wonderful principals looking to help their students graduate college and career ready! Our "Level Up" and "On My Way" curriculum prepares our students by honing in on the much needed SEL skills to be successful during the transition to college and the workforce. On a personal note, it was also such a pleasant surprise to run into my HS English teacher, now Assessment Specialist for Brooklyn North High Schools, Mr. Xavier, who was always so supportive in my youth and left a long lasting impression. A mark of an excellent teacher. ????

Huge congrats to YC Board Member Arlen Benjamin-Gomez for her recognition as one of PoliticsNY's Top 100 Power Players in Education! We're so grateful to have Arlen's expertise and dedication to educational equity on our board. ?? https://lnkd.in/eh_eMygP
Congratulations to Arlen Benjamin-Gomez for being named one of PoliticsNY’s Top 100 Power Players in Education! This recognition is a testament to Arlen’s unwavering commitment to advancing educational equity in New York State through her work as EdTrust-New York’s executive director and her past initiatives around district and school integration, culturally responsive and sustaining education, and the legal rights to education. ? In Arlen’s words, policymakers can support New York students by embracing the fact that good policymaking is complex. “Policymakers are often looking for a silver bullet. A simple one-size-fits-all solution. But our education system is a product of our own making. Root causes of racism, classism, and oppression are embedded in the way we do schooling. In that context, we need to embrace the fact that good policymaking is complex. And we will not get it right if we do not first and foremost engage students, educators, and families in shaping policy.” https://lnkd.in/ercPYRsv ? #PowerList #AMNYPP #PoliticsNYPP
