We at YASP are so excited to invite you, your family and friends to Haverford College for an art exhibit some of our youth Healing Futures graduates have been working on for a few months! These graduates explored their relationship to restorative justice, how they see these practices in the world around them and reflected on their growth throughout the program. Healing Futures asks young people referred to our program to think about their future and best self outside of carceral systems. We hope to see you there ?? This is a part of the ‘Tools of Restorative Justice Symposium’ happening at Haverford the same day! LOCATION: FEB. 21, 2025 5-7PM HAVERFORD COLLEGE VCAM, 2ND FLOOR, ARDMORE, РА 19003

Working to end all forms of youth incarceration!
关于我们
The Youth Art & Self-empowerment Project (YASP) is building a youth-led movement to end the practice of trying and incarcerating young people as adults and create a world without youth incarceration. Through our work in the Philadelphia jails, YASP provides space for incarcerated young people to express themselves creatively and to develop as leaders both within and beyond the prison walls. Young people who have been through the adult court system are at the forefront of YASP, leading the movement to keep young people out of adult prisons and to create new possibilities for youth around the city.

Great reporting in the The Philadelphia Inquirer this week from Samantha Melamed highlighting the vast discrepancies between the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office’s promises on treating kids as kids and the reality. It is past time for DA Krasner to live up to his treat kids as kids promises by: ? Transferring all children’s cases out of adult court ? Ending the deeply coercive practice of making children agree to plead guilty to go to juvenile court ? Removing ALL kids from the city’s cockroach-infested adult jails We’re proud that our court-watching team’s efforts could contribute to this piece. We will keep watching and we will keep fighting for a future where every young person is given the opportunity to grow into adulthood home, free, and thriving.

Yes!! Thank you Youth Sentencing & Reentry Project for your relentless fight for our youth. They are our future—and our now.
?? Philadelphia, like many other cities and states, routinely charges children as adults, incarcerating them in jails and prisons not designed for them.? This practice is harmful, inhumane, and unacceptable. Being charged as an adult makes a child 34% more likely to end up back in the system upon release.? Here’s what you need to know: ? Adult jails and prisons are not designed for children. The isolation, violence, and lack of appropriate care cause irreversible harm. ? The trauma of adult incarceration compounds the challenges children already face—challenges we as a society have failed to address. ? Treating children as adults ignores their capacity for growth, healing, and transformation. Philadelphia—and cities across the country—must stop charging children as adults. We must build systems that invest in young people’s futures. Every child deserves support, not punishment. Every child deserves love, not a cell. It takes all of us—families, communities, schools, advocates—to demand change and stand up for our children. Their lives, their futures, and their dignity depend on it.

Dynamic Leader | Non-profit Executive | 2025 WDAS Woman of Excellence | 2023 City & State Women in Merit Above & Beyond Award | 2021 Philadelphia Tribune, 10 People Under 40 to Watch | 2019 Social Worker of the Year
We came. We pitched. We won. Through a pitch competition, YEAH Philly brought teens from across the city together to create social media content related to how guns impact our lives in Philadelphia. The summer programming gave 30 young people a chance to step outside their comfort zone and do something differently while learning about the realities of violence we deal with on a daily basis. Last week our Healing Futures team was in DC for the 9th National Association of Community and Restorative Justice (NACRJ) Conference. Program Managers Queen-Cheyenne Wade and Felix B. Rosado spoke about “power with” vs. “power over” on this dynamic panel moderated by Erica Washington from Equal Justice USA.

"We see now more than ever that the system is hard on people but it's soft on crime," Songster said. "The way it promotes more crime and more harm is antithetical to accountability. It lets people off the hook by occasionally throwing them away and never encouraging them or supporting them to face those inner demons or those fallibilities that led to them doing certain things." #FlashbackFriday to this Business Insider article featuring our friends at Healing Futures with the Youth Art & Self-empowerment Project and our current Restorative Justice and Transformative Healing Manager, Kempis 'Ghani' Songster. Congrats Felix B. Rosado!!!
For 27 years the state prevented me from experiencing a love like this. Today on the 2-year anniversary of my escape, I’m soaking it all in. Meet Jubilee, a week old, my joy, my freedom, my act of defiance.
