Wishing you & yours a happy and safe #Thanksgiving from The Fire Watch! ??
关于我们
The Fire Watch is Florida’s fight to end veteran suicide. We are uniting our War Fighters and allies to swiftly activate local assets, stand watch, & build a life-saving network. The Problem: Veteran suicide is a growing crisis, & at least 20 veterans are taking their lives every day in America. To date, solutions for this epidemic have been inadequate at best. In particular, federal solutions have had little to no effect on the crisis on the ground here in Northeast Florida. Given that Northeast Florida is home to over 125,000 veterans, the need, the challenge, and opportunity are evident. The Origin: Based upon the success & experience of Northeast Florida non-profit K9s For Warriors, the nation’s largest provider of service dogs to disabled American veterans, in preventing veteran suicide, The Fire Watch was created to re-create on a regional scale the support system & inter-connectivity required to keep our veterans safe from taking their own lives. The Plan: The Fire Watch is a coordinated effort between the City of Jacksonville & the counties of Baker, Clay, Nassau & St. John’s to end veteran suicide in our region. The City of Jacksonville will serve as the legal home of The Fire Watch & coordinate with the surrounding counties via inter-local agreements. Through a series of partnerships & collaborations between local, state, & federal agencies, private donors, media entities, & regional & national non-profits, The Fire Watch will coordinate an effort to organize existing resources to combat the veteran suicide epidemic locally. In addition, The Fire Watch will initiate a series of new programs directed at keeping local veterans supported & far away from even contemplating suicide; in particular, The Fire Watch will create a network of 10,000 local veterans & allies all working together to strengthen our one-on-one support & interpersonal connections. Through trust, & comradery & support, we will keep our warriors safe.

To kick off our Veterans Month, our office in partnership with The Fire Watch conducted Watch Stander training with departments around campus. Veteran suicide remains an epidemic in our country with estimates of 22 veterans committing suicide every day. The Fire Watch program gives our team the resources and knowledge to understand the concerns of military students and to direct them to the support they need with the goal to end veteran suicide. The office of Military and Veteran Student Success has now been designated as a Veteran Safe Place...a place where our team will be able to identify and support a military student in crisis. A huge thank you to Brianne Brown for her excellent training, insights, and encouragement. She is a wealth of knowledge, and we encourage other state universities and businesses to reach out to her for the training and to join us as Veteran Safe Places.

On this Veterans Day, I want to express heartfelt gratitude to the men and women who have served our country. Working with Humana Military this year has only reinforced my appreciation for the service and sacrifices of our armed forces. ? Knowing veterans face unique health challenges that health care workers must be prepared for, CenterWell Home Health partnered with The Fire Watch, an organization that helped reduce veteran suicide in northern Florida by 27%, compared to a 1% decrease across the rest of the state. Together, we’ve trained over 170 clinicians to identify and respond specifically to veteran patients in crisis, and we are now certified as a Veteran Safe Place.? ? And thanks to Marie West, an occupational therapist with CenterWell Home Health, and the Humana Military team, work is underway for a disabled U.S Army veteran and his family to have a safer place to call home. Following a grant from Humana, trade students at Howell Cheney Technical High School are volunteering their time providing much-needed home repairs. I’m so proud that our team was able to connect the dots to support a veteran patient, his wife and three kids, and their local community. ? CenterWell and Humana continue working to provide more specialized veteran care and give them the support and treatment they need. It’s an honor to serve those who have served our country. ? Thank you to all veterans for your service to our nation. ? #VeteransDay #CenterWell
