9 months & 80%.... The scariest question asked when starting a new role is "What happens if I make a mistake?" Most people feel that making a mistake is a fireable offense. So they may hide the mistake or not let their leader know a mistake was made and try to fix it themselves. I believe in the rule of "9 months & 80%". Any new person on my team will hear the same message. I expect that you will make a mistake 80% of the time. Also, I expect it will take 9 months to become comfortable in a new role and understand how the company processes interact/affect what you are responsible for. Mistake is a word that should be removed from your team's vocabulary. Any oversight is an opportunity. An opportunity to learn - the correct/standard way, the expectation, how to ask the question, how to trust your leader to guide you to the right answer, how to trust yourself enough to say I DON'T KNOW. Oversights are Opportunities - Learn, train, and get it right the next time!
