When you have a lot you want to fit on a resume, you may be inclined to use columns, but did you know that columns can alter the way ATS sees your resume? Plus, this before example had almost no space between lines, making it exceptionally difficult to read. And talk about "death by bullets!" By adding in some white space, organizing the information better, taking away columns, and even adding an eye-catching testimonial, the after has a bigger impact. I don't often show you IT resumes, so here's an example of a network engineer for #makeoverMonday. While the client had good information on her resume before, it was three pages long, all in bullets, and hard to read. By cutting to the chase and adding accomplishments, we were able to put a focus on the client's talents and value add, keeping it at two pages. ?? Are you front-loading your resume accomplishments? So many times, I review resumes that actually have accomplishments, but just try to find the outcome. I dare you. That winning result is hidden at the end of the bullet, destined to die a slow, lonely death. This is the kind of thing I usually see: * Created a program as the leader of a cross-functional team of marketers, sales professionals, and customer service leaders, coordinating all aspects of the project from scheduling to go-live. Within two months of launch, sales increased $400K and customer satisfaction skyrocketed. Okay, there's an accomplishment there, yes, but ugh. It’s so hard to read. And who’s really reading your resume anyway? Try this instead: * Increased sales $400K and skyrocketed customer satisfaction in 2 months through development and launch of customer-focused program; united collaborative, cross-functional team to deliver these results. See the difference? Leading words such as increased, boosted, skyrocketed, decreased, reduced, avoided, mitigated (and many others!) tell the reader, “Hey, I’m an accomplishment! "If ATS systems can't read headers or footers, why should I put my contact information on the header of page two of my resume?" Great question! While ATS systems cannot read headers, footers, graphs, charts, tables, icons, or images, you can still put them on your resume—for people. And that's exactly what your contact information on page two is for. Imagine you're a busy HR person and you print out the resumes you plan to review. Then they all fall on the floor. Yikes!
