Young Voices Leading the Way: Social Media Takeover for International Education Day This week, 14-year-old Rafael Bastos, a student from the Eco-School Escola da Crian?a in Brazil, is taking over our social media and the Foundation for Environmental Education’s Young Reporters for the Environment Alumni accounts! Rafael’s takeover comes as part of our #UNatYourDoorstep live event, creating an exciting additional platform for dialogue on #SDG4: Access to #QualityEducation. Rafael isn’t just passionate about environmental sustainability, he’s a leader. At just 14, he’s already: ?? Coordinated his school’s Eco-Code, demonstrating his commitment to sustainability and education. ?? Played a key role in his city’s The Ocean Starts Here campaign, raising awareness about protecting marine life. ?? Designed and produced creative materials like buttons and illustrations for his school’s Eco-School program. ?? Led Hackathon teams to victory three times, showcasing innovation and teamwork. ?? Season’s Greetings from the Young Reporters for the Environment programme! ?? ??As the year comes to a close, we want to take a moment to celebrate the highlights and achievements of Young Reporters for the Environment in 2024. It’s been an exciting year filled with innovation, collaboration, and impactful storytelling. Here's what made this year special: ??2024 marked 30 years of YRE, and we celebrated with special edition logos, capturing the spirit and legacy of this global movement. We also unveiled our refreshed YRE website, making it easier than ever for young reporters, educators and partners to connect, share, and learn. ??A new partnership with UNESCO’s ASPnet schools brought fresh perspectives and exciting collaboration opportunities. ??YRE also took centre stage with the UN at Your Doorstep live sessions (collaboration with Ages of Globalization), amplifying youth voices on global challenges. ?????????The annual competition continued to inspire and showcased environmental stories told by youth worldwide. This year saw the launch of our new podcast category and the Gosia Award. From storytelling techniques to content curation, YRE embraced AI to explore new possibilities while staying true to our mission of authentic, impactful reporting. Furthermore, we launched a new competition theme, “Ecosystem Restoration” (in line with the UN Decade for Ecosystem Restoration UN Environment Programme), challenging young reporters to explore and advocate for one of the most pressing global priorities. ??Thank you for being part of YRE’s journey in 2024. This is a social media takeover from our Young Gecko Reporters group partnering with the Foundation for Environmental Education and Young Reporters for the Environment Alumni. It's not just about our campus! The Gecko Reporters for The Environment Service group from The Overseas School of Colombo are taking it to the streets! ??♀???♂? They're on a mission to clean up the neighborhood, one sweep at a time. ?? ??They hunt for PET bottles, tin, and glass bottles and which they sell to local recycling centers. With their motto "Nothing is really waste, just stuff in the wrong place”, the Young Geckos hit the streets every Thursday and the whole community gets involved including students, teachers, parents, neighbors and local business groups. The Geckos are committed to a sustainable future, both on and off campus. ?? Join us for the UN @ Your Doorstep Live Session today Monday, November 25th at 11 am ET!
