“Annie began as a part-time staff associate, gradually evolving into the acting Area Director, steering the establishment of the YL ONE ministry in Sheridan, WY. Focused on young women aged 11 to 19, court-ordered for rehabilitation at the Wyoming Girls School, Annie tackled the challenges of addiction and trauma, providing mentorship to young women who needed support. As she developed YL ONE in her area, she also learned that the Young Life Club had to look a little bit different. Recognizing the need for a tailored approach, the traditional club structure was adapted. Songs could trigger trauma, and authentic conversations required careful navigation. Young Life was a lifelong passion for J.D. Gibbs, one of the co-founders of Joe Gibbs Racing, who served on Young Life’s national board before his passing in January 2019. The J.D. Gibbs Legacy Fund was established to honor J.D. and support Young Life with its continued mission in youth ministry.? J.D. was awarded our 2019 Alumni Achievement Award. 2024 marked ?? years of Young Life Hong Kong. Here’s just one of many amazing stories of the community we’ve fostered across the globe: “When 13-year-old Nate first came to Young Life events, anger raged inside him. Sometimes it came out in flaring redness, other times in punches into walls, or even people. Friendship and the feeling of being cared for drew him into Young Life Club (or “that Jesus club” as students sometimes called it) at Concordia Lutheran School of North Point. Though he came, he kept his guard up, never answering anything beneath the surface level. Over the next couple of years, God’s love through the community melted his exterior. He was willing to share more openly. We learned he came from a difficult family background, including abuse and divorce. With peers, he frequently faced bullying. In 2023, he started coming regularly to Ascend, a citywide Club where students and leaders bouldered and heard real life stories of Jesus together. Leaders met his mom, who shared that Young Life gatherings were the only events Nate attended outside of school. He had often felt unsafe and unwelcomed by peers. At the 2024 summer camp, he had a teary-eyed sharing during cabin time, and his leaders saw what a long way he had come from the angry, guarded person they had first met.
