We're pleased to have contributed our insight to the shaping of this project, through an invitation from West Yorkshire Combined Authority. Sports clubs and organisations in West Yorkshire play an important role in their communities, particularly in the most deprived areas. This programme of support can have a positive impact on those people who run them.
Introducing Sport For Good West Yorkshire. We’re proud to announce that we’re working with partners to launch a new programme of support for people who run sports clubs and organisations in the most deprived areas of West Yorkshire. Almost 2,500 sports clubs and organisations are registered in West Yorkshire. They play an important role in their local communities, offering a place for people to come together and feel proud of their community ?? But this is at risk, as sports clubs and organisations face more and more challenges. Costs are rising, young people are priced out, and there’s a drop in volunteering. ?? 25% of sports clubs are considering reducing their sessions and many are using their reserves to manage these difficulties - this is not a long-term solution. We’re working with TSL Kirklees, Community Action Bradford & District, Voluntary Action Leeds, VAC, and Participate Projects on a project funded by West Yorkshire Combined Authority. This partnership brings together our collective expertise with voluntary and community organisations of all sizes and knowledge of communities across West Yorkshire to support sports organisations to thrive! Know an organisation that might benefit? Let them know that the project is launching in March and where they can find out more ?? link in the comments.

According to a major Moving Communities study, participation in public leisure centre activities saved the NHS £397.8 million in 2023. Conditions such as dementia and hip fractures, which are among the most expensive and debilitating to treat, are significantly reduced through targeted exercise programmes.

Richmond Hill Academy is situated within the most deprived postcode in West Yorkshire with high youth crime rates. Many children at the school access free school meals and are unable to access activities outside of school. We supported the school with funding from Sport England's #OpeningSchoolFacilties to create LS9 Club, delivering a wide range of physical activities for two hours, three evenings per week. The school created it for the most vulnerable young people including Looked After Children, children who have had persistent absenteeism, as well as those new to the country. As a result of the project, the school have seen improved behaviour in school as well as increased attendances for certain children, and even an increase in safeguarding disclosures from young people.
