关于我们
The York County SPCA was founded in 1926. We are a nonprofit independent humane organization with no affiliation with other animal welfare organizations such as the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), and donations to the ASPCA do not make their way back to this local shelter. Most of our funding comes from generous individual community members and civic organizations. The rest of our funding comes from fundraising events, grants, fees, and municipal contracts. We could not do this important work without the ongoing love and support of our community members. Thanks to our community’s consistent trust, support, and contributions, we are able to fulfill our mission for York County’s human and animal populations. In 2020… We took in 2,406 animals. Most were strays or owner surrendered animals. We investigated and prosecuted over 165 cases of animal cruelty, neglect, or abuse. We adopted out over 1,294 animals. This includes dogs, cats, birds, chinchillas, ferrets, guinea pigs, hamsters, other small animals, rabbits, reptiles, turtles, horses… we are truly an open admission shelter! We sent over 170 animals to other rescues by developing partnerships beyond our shelter walls. We reunited over 196 animals with their owners. Our high volume, low-cost clinic performed 7,218 spay/neuter surgeries. Our veterinarian staff performed another 1,500+ spay/neuter surgeries, which means the York County SPCA performed over 8,500 spay/neuter surgeries! More than 400 volunteers donated their time and energy to help us walk dogs, adopt animals, fold laundry, run events, and perform many other critical duties. Total volunteer hours amounted to over 10,500 hours. That’s the equivalent of about 5 full-time employees!

We would like to extend a very special thank you to York College of Pennsylvania for inviting two of our staff members to participate in two events this past week! ?? Jessica Hoffman, Philanthropic Advisor, and Alyson Malay, Volunteer Coordinator, attended a Non-Profit Meetup on Wednesday, November 13 to speak with students about the York County SPCA and our mission. Aly also attended a freshman volunteerism class to speak with students about our volunteer opportunities and the vital role our volunteers play in our daily shelter operations. Thank you, YCP, for inviting us to share the work we are doing in our community and for students to be a part of it too! ????

On Tuesday, in honor of National Cat Day, a group of employees from Minerals Technologies Inc. volunteered at the YCSPCA and cleaned our cattery and cat condo windows, sorted donations, made frozen dog treats, and filled our community cat houses with hay. They also had a tour and a chance to visit with a few of our adoptable cats! In addition to their generous volunteer service, Mineral Technologies donated a pallet of litter to our shelter. Thank you so much for your support! It takes a community to care for shelter pets. They donated a pallet of litter (60 bags) and made a monetary donation to us in honor of National Cat Day.?

?? Need for Canned Cat Food Donations! ?? Our high-volume, low-cost spay/neuter clinic has seen a significant increase in TNR (trap-neuter-return) surgeries, with over 750 cats spayed and neutered in September alone—a 50% increase from last year! Each TNR cat is fed a mixture of wet and dry food post-surgery to help with recovery and hydration. Eating while recovering from surgery supports healing. With this surge in TNR surgeries, we’ve used more than 500 cans of cat food this month. We need canned cat food donations to support this critical work. To help, please shop our Amazon Wishlist: https://lnkd.in/eUxg4WrP Donations can also be brought to the shelter's donation bins from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., seven days a week. Every can help a cat in need! Thank you for your support!

As we say goodbye to a friend, we ask you to support Ava's Legacy: https://lnkd.in/e-gwixYx In 2013, Ava was found wandering the streets of York County, PA, emaciated and in desperate need of help. The York County SPCA rescued her and gave her the chance she so deserved. Ava quickly became a symbol of hope and resilience, serving as the “poster dog” for the York County SPCA’s pit bull rescue efforts under the #justiceforava campaign. We recently heard from Ava's forever family, The Twifords, who let us know that this sweet girl is now at rest. The Twiford Family is generously donating $500 to our Second Chance Fund in her honor. We are inviting you to support Ava's legacy by giving every dog their own second chance. Read their message and learn more at https://lnkd.in/e-gwixYx

We’re thrilled to share the incredible work done by Troop 20813 as part of their Silver Award project! To meet their sustainability challenge, these four amazing Girl Scouts teamed up with us to make a meaningful difference in the lives of stray animals. Through heartfelt letters to the community and a fundraiser at one of our adoption events, they raised enough funds to create 5 essential "paw packs" for our shelter. Each paw pack includes a microchip scanner, a water bowl, and a leash—tools that will help local officials reunite lost pets with their owners before they even reach our shelter. ???? But that’s not all! The troop also crafted wonderful dog and cat toys for our shelter animals, bringing extra joy to our furry friends. A huge thank you to Troop 20813 for their dedication and creativity. Your efforts are making a real difference, and we couldn’t be more grateful! ??????

WE CLEARED THE SHELTER! ?? More than 100 animals found their forever homes in just two days!!! After almost two years of operating at or beyond our capacity, we cannot believe that our entire kennel is almost empty! We still have two dogs at the shelter that are available for adoption - Azul and Cheetah - but everyone else has been adopted! We cannot thank all of the wonderful families who adopted this weekend enough! Our staff and volunteers worked so hard to make this event happen and to create lifesaving outcomes for the pets in our care. We still have two wonderful dogs at the shelter, and several more in foster homes, waiting for their forever! Please consider opening your home to a shelter pet ??

?? August is National Immunization Awareness Month, and we want to help provide our community's pet owners with accessible resources and tips on how to protect your furry family members from common diseases! ?? Read about our best tips and resources HERE ?? https://lnkd.in/eydCSSw6 ?? Right before our recent power outage in July, our own shelter faced a difficult situation because of unvaccinated dogs in the community. ???? In the span of one week, three dogs admitted to our shelter became symptomatic and tested positive for canine parvovirus or “parvo,” a highly contagious disease affecting dogs. Our staff had to work quickly to separate these dogs from our other canine population and treat them for at least 14 days (the incubation period for this specific virus). The best way to stop the spread of common pet diseases is prevention. YOU can help us prevent this from happening to pets in our community by utilizing available resources to keep your pet up to date on their vaccinations. ?? If you have any questions about these resources, please email us at [email protected].
