We are counting down this week to Sunday's Oyster Festival by acknowledging our major sponsors. Today, we say thank you to the W. Dale Brougher Foundation. W. Dale Brougher was a successful businessman for many years in York. He and his wife Nancy established the foundation to benefit community organizations in York and Palm Beach, Fla. The Oyster Festival sponsorship is one of many ways the foundation has contributed to the History Center over the years, and we appreciate the support.

The History Center's 50th Annual Oyster Festival is less than two weeks away. We wanted to specifically acknowledge our event sponsors for generously supporting this year's festival, starting today with The York Water Company. The company has been a fixture in York since 1816, and it is a generous community partner, for us and many other organizations. York Water President and CEO JT Hand is the vice chair of our Board of Directors and an enthusiastic advocate for the History Center. And with this year's Oyster Festival sponsorship the company honors Mr. Vernon Bracey, Vice President, Customer Service, following his 26 years of service to the York community, including Oyster Festival. Thank you Vernon, and thank you York Water Company.

We rely on community support to cover the cost of our operations. Your contributions allow us to plan and develop new exhibits, use technology to engage new audiences and share stories that connect the past and the present. Here are two ways to make a difference: Qualified Charitable Distribution: This is a gift made with funds from an IRA to a qualified charitable organization. The gift goes directly to the nonprofit and can be excluded from your taxable income. Consult your tax advisor or IRS.gov for more information. Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC): This is a state program that allows eligible businesses to reduce their tax liability by donating to approved nonprofits in select categories. The History Center is typically approved in the Educational Improvement Organization (EIO) category. If you or your business are eligible to participate, please consider supporting the thousands of school students who participate in field trips. The 50TH ANNUAL OYSTER FESTIVAL is a little more than a month away, and there are still sponsorship opportunities available. This event has become one of York County's most popular community celebrations, and this year's 50th edition will be extra special. We're bringing the event back to the Colonial Complex where it all started back in 1974, and all the food and fun along Pershing Avenue will lead visitors to our new museum. Admission to the festival and the museum is FREE, and we're expecting 2,000 visitors this year. We’d love to partner with you. Join us as a sponsor at whatever level feels right for your company. We had a real, live History Maker visiting the History Makers Tower this week. That's York County's own Loretta Claiborne, a global ambassador for Special Olympics and a multi-sport Special Olympics athlete for many years. Loretta stopped in with Samantha Dorm to see her image on the tower and to explore the new museum. You are welcome back anytime, Loretta! We can't wait for everyone to see our new home when we officially open to the general public the weekend of Aug. 2-4.
