Our Keystone Compac III retaining wall system was used to construct four retaining walls for “The Edge at Middleton” project in Aberdeen, MD. More than 4,950 SF of wall area was installed in 2022 by Live Green Landscape Associates (Reisterstown, MD) for Chesapeake Contracting Group (Owings Mills, MD). This development includes 3 multi-story buildings with 237 residential units. The retaining walls were essential to balancing the site and maintaining the grade along the adjacent roadway, with a sound wall constructed above the largest wall.

In recent years, a growing trend in architectural design has been the use of multiple colors, textures, and sizes of masonry blocks for exterior walls. This "ashlar" style enhances a building’s visual appeal in a cost-effective way, demonstrating how masonry can create stunning, award-winning structures. Pictured here is a selection of buildings showcasing this style, using our colored architectural masonry units.

The Clarksburg Fire Station project in Montgomery County, MD, demonstrates the adaptability of the MagnumStone Retaining Walls big block gravity wall system. Spanning 294 feet in length and reaching a maximum height of 14 feet (including embedment with seven block courses), the wall covers an impressive 2,778 square feet. Designed for a constrained cut scenario with limited excavation space, the project employed 2-foot and 4-foot concrete extenders in place of geogrid reinforcement. This approach minimized wall depth and ensured no encroachment beyond the property line. The tallest section of the wall features an 8-foot base depth, combining a 2-foot block with both 4-foot and 2-foot extenders. This project underscores the benefits of big block gravity wall systems, offering a robust and space-efficient solution for challenging construction environments. Stevenson University, Owings Mills, MD, acquired the 117-acre Rosewood property adjacent to its north campus. To integrate this new land, a new road, Mustang Way, was built to cross an active stream. Hillis-Carnes Engineering Associates (Sparks, MD) designed the segmental retaining walls using our Keystone Retaining Wall Systems LLC Compac III block system, which were reinforced with Mirafi geogrid. Griffith Brothers (Fallston, MD) installed 14,679 square feet of wall area in Fieldstone color for site contractor RLO Contractors (Jessup, MD). The walls reached a maximum height of 20 feet. Construction began in late fall 2022 and concluded in spring 2023, overcoming challenges like working in an active waterway and winter weather. The project also required extensive coordination between the concrete contractor--who built the headwalls and structures--and the wall contractor, resulting in multiple mobilizations. #WednesdayWallWonder

The Carnegie at Washingtonian Center in Gaithersburg, MD is a remarkable example of the versatility and strength of the MagnumStone Retaining Walls big block gravity retaining wall system. The project utilized 15,288 SF of MagnumStone, installed for creating stable retaining walls that were crucial given the site's limitations. The MagnumStone system was chosen because traditional segmental block with geogrid wasn't feasible due to site constraints, such as limited excavation space and existing utilities. Five walls were constructed, with the tallest section reaching an impressive 26 feet and featuring a base depth of 10 feet using the MagnumStone blocks and two 4' extenders.
