YMCA Youth and Government? is a nationwide civic engagement and leadership development program that provides students in middle school, high school, and college with the opportunity to represent and serve their communities through model government, leadership and professional development, advocacy, and service-learning. Youth and Government collectively serves over 55,000 students across all 50 states and DC. Students can participate through a Youth and Government student organization at their school and/or through their local YMCA. These school-based or YMCA-based groups are led by student officers, and advised by school faculty, community volunteers, and/or YMCA staff.

The YMCA Louisiana Youth and Government (Y&G) program is a statewide initiative promoting civic engagement through the YMCA's philosophy of being an organization that is continuously active in exercising social responsibility. This particular program prepares high schoolers for moral and political leadership. Through Y&G, teens learn about and experience government policies first-hand and learn how they can be changemakers to improve their communities. Plus, teens form lasting friendships, benefit from mentors, and sharpen their critical thinking, public speaking and writing skills. The mission of the YMCA Youth & Government program is two-fold: To encourage and foster leadership through service, fellowship, responsibility, and respect for oneself and others among all participants, and To educate and engage students in the process of government from local to national to international so that they become more active participants in their communities. As a newly appointed Plano YMCA Board Member, it was an honor to represent the Plano Family YMCA and the YMCA Texas Youth and Government at the YMCA Impact Reception in Dallas! I had a wonderful time meeting with community leaders from across the metroplex and discussing my Y Story and experience with the YMCA Youth and Government program. Thank you to the YMCA for all that you do! It is an honor to be a part of such an organization.

Earlier this month, I completed my term as South Carolina’s Youth Governor. The experience was truly transformative and I continue to be inspired by the thousands of students that the YMCA Youth and Government program impacts and empowers. Though my time in this position may be over, I look forward to continuing to embrace the ideals of servant leadership and bipartisan collaboration that I developed in YIG throughout life as I carry forward the message that democracy is not a spectator sport. Thanks to the friends and mentors I gained during my YIG journey— let’s keep pushing for hope, progress, and change together!
