YMCA of the USA was recently honored with the prestigious Green Book Initiative Pioneer Award in the category of Lodging at the inaugural 2024 Celebration of Cultural Tourism Awards. Presented in collaboration with the National Tour Association, the award recognizes lodging establishments that played a vital role in the historic Negro Motorist Green Book (1936-1965). More than 50 YMCA locations across the country were named safe places for African American travelers to stay during the era of segregation in the late 1950s, demonstrating the Y's longstanding commitment to diversity, acceptance and hospitality for all. Accepting the award on behalf of the Y is Terri Harvill from the YMCA of Greater Birmingham (center) pictured with David Jackson and Karin Aaron from the Green Book Experience.

The L.L.Bean Bootmobile was a highlight of last week's grand opening of a new store in Indianapolis, but I think the real star of the event was the strong partnership between L.L.Bean and the Y. I was honored to join YMCA of Greater Indianapolis President and CEO Gregg Hiland to recognize L.L.Bean's generous $10,000 gift to the local Y, and to celebrate our larger national partnership. Since 2022, L.L.Bean has donated $2.3 million to help YMCA of the USA give outdoor summer camp experiences to nearly 30,000 kids who otherwise might not have had the opportunity. Thank you for your partnership and shared commitment to ensuring everyone has the opportunity to support their health and wellness by spending time outside.? #YMCA #BeAnOutsider

With a piece published on Medium, we’re sharing stories of Team Up projects from across the country where real bridgebuilding is happening. To help bridge the digital divide and give more students access to the tools and resources they need to succeed academically, we are teaming up with The Achievery, a free online learning platform for K-12 students created by AT&T to bring this innovative resource to many of our Y before and afterschool programs nationwide. We believe helping students thrive in digital learning environments will not only narrow the homework gap but also help build critical digital literacy skills.
