Thank you, Chairman Scott and Ranking Member Gillibrand, for inviting me to provide testimony during the Senate Select Committee on Aging’s hearing, “Breaking the Cycle of Senior Loneliness: Strengthening Family and Community Support.” It was a privilege to appear before the committee and share how our country’s 2,600 YMCAs support seniors by helping them make connections, build community and prevent or delay chronic disease. As I said during my remarks, many older adults come to the Y seeking to improve their physical health. But they come back day after day because of what they find: a welcoming community that supports their mental health and reduces their feelings of isolation and loneliness. I applaud the committee for bringing attention to the epidemic of loneliness affecting seniors today. The Y is committed to building on the vital work we already do and partnering in communities to identify and implement new solutions. This afternoon I’ll have the privilege of representing our country’s 2,600 YMCAs while testifying in front of members of the Senate Select Committee on Aging. ? The Y engages nearly 4 million adults over the age of 55 each year, and during my testimony I’ll share how YMCAs across the country help seniors make connections, build community and prevent or delay chronic disease. ? The epidemic of loneliness in our country is acutely felt by seniors, and loneliness is known to have a negative effect on our health and well-being. Research has shown that seniors who engage with the Y experience a decrease in loneliness and increase in their overall well-being and social connectedness. Nearly 400 YMCA staff, volunteers and youth advocates are heading to Washington, D.C., this week for the Y’s National Advocacy Days. We’ll be meeting with members of the 119th Congress to advocate for policies that strengthen families and communities across the country. I’m kicking off the week by sending this letter to Congress, which?outlines the leading priorities our advocates hope to discuss during their meetings, including: ???Expanding Access to Affordable Child Care: Strengthening programs like the Child Care and Development Block Grant and Head Start to ensure families can access quality early-childhood and afterschool programs. ?? ?Supporting Families Through Tax Policy: Advocating for reforms like?adopting?provisions from the Child Care Availability and Affordability Act, making the New Markets Tax Credit permanent and supporting the Charitable Act to provide essential resources to families and nonprofits. ? Investing in Health and?Safety: Securing funding for the CDC to support programs that prevent drowning, reduce chronic disease and promote community wellness. ??
