Our Y welcomes all and strengthens communities,
关于我们
Our YMCA is an inclusive organization joined together by a shared commitment to nurturing the potential of kids, promoting healthy living, and fostering a sense of social responsibility. The YMCA of the North Shore is comprised of six local YMCAs that have joined together or been developed over the last decade and a half to create one YMCA association. YMCAs in our association date back to the 1850s, beginning with the Salem YMCA. In 1994, when the Beverly Regional YMCA merged with the Cape Ann YMCA, our association started developing and strengthening a sense of community across the North Shore. The Salem and Marblehead/Swampscott YMCAs joined our association in 1999, officially creating the YMCA of the North Shore. With the combined resources of four YMCAs, our newly formed association invested in a property in Ipswich, launched a capital campaign and built a new YMCA. The building opened in December of 1999; bringing the number of local Ys in our association to five. Numerous renovations and additions took place over the years to add space and amenities to all five YMCAs. In 2006, the Haverhill YMCA joined the YMCA of the North Shore, growing our service area to 25 cities and towns. And in 2014, the YMCA took over the former Rockingham Athletic Club, creating the Plaistow Community YMCA in Plaistow, NH.

Our Y recently reached an amazing milestone! We are thrilled to have started welcoming new residents to the redeveloped space at the former Cape Ann YMCA, 71 Middle St, Gloucester. The John J. Meany Community Housing for seniors offers 44 affordable, one-bedroom units of much‐needed senior rental housing with support services. The units are for those aged 62 and over with units reserved for veterans, those with disabilities, and members of the local community. This project will be life-changing for our new residents, like Phil, who lost his wife in February. Phil shared that this was the first big decision he made without his wife and while his new journey will be tough without her, he is looking forward to having a new place to call home where he can find community and regain a sense of peace. Providing affordable housing has always been a core component of the Y’s mission. Chris Lovasco, YMCA of the North Shore President & CEO said, “This project is especially important to me as a Gloucester native. I have family and friends in this community and know many seniors who deserve quality affordable housing. I am grateful to all those who came together to make this project a reality. We are committed to exploring new and innovative ways to provide even more affordable housing.” The $26 million project is centrally located in the downtown historic area of Gloucester and close to many amenities as well as public transportation. We are so proud and grateful to the many staff who made this project a reality. Also, a huge thank you to our project team; Affirmative Investments, Inc., SV Design, Windover Construction, Meridian Associates, Inc. and Anser Advisory. And a special shout out to all our funders; Executive Office of Housing and Livable Communities, Community Economic Development Assistance Corporation (CEDAC), Institution for Savings, North Shore Bank, City of Gloucester, Massachusetts Housing Investment Corporation (MHIC), MassDevelopment, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development A commemorative ribbon cutting will be held on Wednesday, November 6th at 9:00 am.?Gloucester Daily Times

The hours after school can be a gap in a child's day, but at the Y, they become a time of discovery and growth. Local kids and teens within our community are exploring new interests, building confidence, and staying active in our high-quality after-school programs. With a commitment to provide financial assistance, we ensure that every child, no matter their family's financial situation, can be part of this incredible experience. This past Friday, we had the honor of celebrating Paralympian Leanne Smith and Coach Dave Modzelewski, fresh off their medal winning and record breaking performance in the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games! ?? Leanne shared her incredible story in a Q&A session with YMCA of the North Shore CEO Chris Lovasco and received multiple proclamations and citations from Senator Joan Lovely, State Representative Jerry Parisella, and Beverly Mayor Michael Cahill. Mayor Cahill even proclaimed October 18 as Leanne Smith Day! We're so proud of you, Leanne and Dave! ????
