We want to shout out WSS / Foot Locker for their incredible generosity in supporting Y’s wildfire relief efforts. When we shared that we were accepting donations to support those impacted they quickly sent over hundreds of pairs of sandals, 50 boxes of Nike and Jordan products, and 1,000 pairs of Reebok shoes, socks, and shirts. Additionally, they gave a grant of $10,000 to our wildfire relief impact fund supporting the ongoing services we are offering impacted families and individuals such as: childcare, camp, Y memberships, and mental health supports. We have served tens of thousands to date in the fire response and we are only able to do this with the help of partners and sponsors like WSS. Thank you! This past Saturday, we brought the energy, passion, and 90’s vibes to the home of 90210—Torrance South Bay High School! ???? Over 700 LA Y youth-serving staff came together for a day of learning, collaboration, and growth at our annual Youth Development Summit! But this wasn’t your average professional development—this was a house party for impact! ???? With dynamic workshops led by the Los Angeles YMCA and our incredible youth development partners, our staff gained valuable tools to keep the Y at the forefront of youth empowerment & community change! ?? Nearly 40 years after the YMCA was founded they hired the first woman employee as a “boys work secretary” Ellen Brown was her name and she showed just how incredible and necessary it is to include everyone. Sharing some gratitude this Friday for supporters who responded to the call for goods and services in response to the LA wildfires and continue to be a support for our communities each day. ?? PRIME Beverage gave 16 pallets of hydration for distribution hubs. ?? Lakeshore Learning Materials provided supplies for emergency childcare classes to have the materials to learn, grow, and have fun. ?? Kaiser Permanente granted funds to support the efforts across all 28 centers. ?? Herbalife donated essential goods and over 50 cases of bottled water. While the fires are now out the recovery is going to take years. Last weekend, California YMCA Youth & Government hosted its 77th Model Legislature & Court at the state capitol in Sacramento. Y&G Delegates traveled from all over the state to gather at this event to present their bills, and create their own constitution! They also elected their 78th Youth Governor, an inspiring weekend of active learning and fun! These delegates all benefit greatly from the MLC Program, as it helps foster public speaking abilities, responsibility, and leadership. Through assuming these various rolls of government officials, these students actively learn by doing. The work they are performing is high level, and the skills they develop can translate into any career path. Last week, FireAid recently distributed the first $50 million to L.A Wildfire relief groups. We are so honored to be in the group of selected organizations supporting fire victims and first responders. In 2015, Kevin Washington became the first African American - and the first person of color - to serve as CEO of the YMCA of the USA. Besides reimagining a new service delivery system across the Y movement, Washington was a leading national voice for relief from federal government for nonprofits devastated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
