In May 1978, I was just four years old, and it was just me and my mom, living in a small apartment on Walmsley Blvd in Chesterfield. My mom was a single parent, juggling everything on her own. While doing it all, the one thing she never did was learn how to swim. We didn’t have access to pools, and swimming wasn’t something she grew up doing. But she wanted something different for me. She enrolled me in swim lessons at our local YMCA. She knew that learning how to swim could be lifesaving. It was only possible because the Y offered subsidized swim lessons. Because of that program, I gained a life-saving skill that has stayed with me to this day. My mom’s love and the Y’s mission gave me something she never had the opportunity to learn. It’s more than just swimming—it’s community, safety, and building up the next generation. This is my Y story (and my official Pollywog patch from 1978) and one of many reasons I’m so passionate about the YMCA and its life-changing opportunities. We are truly changing lives.
