Continuing the charitable legacy of Jean and Tom Yawkey by giving back to those most in need
关于我们
Since its founding in 1977, the Yawkey Foundation has carried on the philanthropic legacy of Tom Yawkey, a well-known Boston Red Sox owner and wildlife conservationist, and his wife, Jean Yawkey, the first woman elected to the board of the National Baseball Hall of Fame. By focusing on charitable giving in the form of grants and scholarships, the Yawkey Foundation seeks to improve the quality of life for children, families, and underserved populations in the communities that were most important to Tom and Jean – Boston, Massachusetts and Georgetown County, South Carolina. The Yawkey Foundation upholds the charitable mission of Tom Yawkey: "Do what is right. Do it quietly. And don’t expect praise for being kind." With that in mind, the Foundation gives back to nonprofits that strive to make a meaningful difference, concentrating on areas of giving that were meaningful to the Yawkeys, including conservation and wildlife, healthcare, education, human services, youth and amateur athletics, and arts and culture. Through the Foundation’s work, the unwavering passion that Tom and Jean had for quietly giving back to those in need continues today. Since 1977 the Yawkey Foundation has contributed more than $530 million to nonprofit organizations that provide resources and opportunities to those most in need.

Congratulations to The BASE - what an amazing moment for urban baseball in Boston!?Over our many years of partnership, we’ve come to deeply value your commitment, dedication, visionary leadership, and everything that you do to provide opportunities and enrichment to the youth you serve so well. Jean and Tom Yawkey were passionate about baseball because they truly believed in and understood all the good that can come from the game - both on and off the field - in terms of cooperation, respect, friendship, teamwork, confidence, and so much more. We know you’ll keep hitting it out of the park in Roxbury and beyond! ?
We are thrilled to announce we recently purchased our facility at 150 Shirley St., along with the adjacent lot at 136 Shirley St., in Roxbury. As a result, in the years ahead we will have the capacity to make deeper investments in programs and serve more young people and families. The BASE is now a property owner with a vested stake in the future of Roxbury and the Newmarket neighborhood. Our vision is to create long-term, intergenerational impact through sports and education, developing young leaders to succeed and become property owners, themselves, right here in Boston.? ? We are grateful for all those who contributed at this critical juncture for The BASE. Foremost, we would like to thank our lead partner, the Yawkey Foundation, who awarded a $1.5 million Transformational Grant for the purchase, design and renovations of the building. The grant further cements our longstanding relationship and includes the renaming of the facility to the Yawkey Urban Sports Complex: Home of The BASE. ? In addition, we thank Sandy & Paul Edgerley, Barbara & Amos Hostetter, Anne Lovett & Steve Woodsum, Tristin & Martin Mannion, Brooke & Will Muggia, Dana & Rob Smith, Stephanie & Brian Spector, The Boston Foundation, Eastern Bank, and several anonymous supporters. Thanks to the support of these families and institutions, and the leadership of BASE President & CEO Steph Lewis and our Board of Directors, The BASE will be a permanent resource in #Roxbury. We couldn't be more proud, and we look forward to deepening our impact with Boston's amazing young people and families. Love hearing the legendary Boston Red Sox pitcher Jim Lonborg discuss Elston Howard's immeasurably valuable presence behind the plate! Check out this and other highlights of that magical season from the players themselves at The Sports Museum's new exhibit, Summer of Love - The 1967 Impossible Dream Red Sox. What a perfect opportunity for this quote from Elston himself from Boston Globe Media (August 5, 1967) on why he joined the team. And while we're at it, here's a nice candid of Tom and Elston chatting on the field back in the day!
