Yamaha Motor Corporation's R&D team in Japan is exploring the potential of?plant-derived FRP composites, focusing on flax fiber, a sustainable alternative to traditional materials like glass and carbon fiber. Flax fiber isn’t just for clothing anymore—it could be the key to making?recyclable, eco-friendly WaveRunners?that meet Yamaha’s high-performance standards. Flax fiber has unique properties that make it both exciting and challenging to work with. Unlike glass fiber, flax frays irregularly and absorbs moisture more easily, making it tough to handle — especially when developing something as high-stakes as a PWC hull. But that hasn’t stopped the team from making significant progress. Their goal? To create a next-gen?SuperJet personal watercraft?prototype using flax fiber that meets Yamaha’s stringent standards and brings sustainable materials into the spotlight. After countless tests and refinements, they’ve found ways to strengthen the material and ensure it can handle the rigors of personal watercaft riding. The flax fiber laminate, crafted using a specialized vacuum infusion process, shows real promise. It’s lightweight, strong, and offers an elastic feel and gentle appearance that could redefine the look and feel of WaveRunners. After presenting their progress at the?Japan International Boat Show 2024, the Yamaha team is more confident than ever that flax fiber composites could be in the future. By pushing the boundaries of what’s possible, Yamaha again proves that?performance and sustainability?can go hand-in-hand. #yamahawaverunners #personalwatercraft #powersportsbusiness #powersportsindustry #marineindustry #boatingindustry #sustainability #innovation
