The world is falling apart around us and yet there are still glimmers of hope. So I am keeping my promise to post weekly snippets of “Campus Conversations” from Yale Online. Today’s post is about design: how can you tie tradition with technology, and fit what is culturally acceptable with what the community wants? In the third module we tie health and human right frameworks with user centric design, covering the do’s and don’ts of generating and implementing new ideas. At the end of the module I interview Ruchit Nagar, who founded Khushi Baby out of a course at Yale, to improve immunizations among children in India. He shares how he and his team worked to incorporate local culture, history, and tradition into innovating new health solutions. We can’t stop – especially when things get bad – we have to keep centering on health and human rights, and trying to build something better. You can sign up for this free online course here, to practice the ten stage framework for creating positive social change for any topic of your choice: https://lnkd.in/eWZ_ru64 Yale School of Management Yale School of Public Health Yale Jackson School of Global Affairs Coursera?

"I wish we had more community voice when forming." Module 2 is about listening to people before designing an intervention. Who do you wish had more voice? In this snippet of Campus Conversations, I discuss the conditions of collective impact with Adrienne Abbate, who leads a partnership of civic and public actors across sectors to tackle health and safety in her community. I first met Adrienne when former students (Jeff Glenn) were interested in learning more about collective impact and we wrote a case study about her. Adrienne then spoke in my class at Yale School of Management and Yale School of Public Health and it only felt right to feature her work in the free online version of my class on Coursera. Each module of the course ends with a live conversation on campus, and I'm sharing one each week this semester. If you like it and want to see more, you can register for the course for free at https://lnkd.in/eWZ_ru64 This clip ends with Adrienne reflecting on building trust and reaching into all areas that should be at the table. How have you built trust in your work, and gotten everyone who needs to be there, at the table? Please share in the comments. I promised I would share a snippet each week and I'm going to keep my promise despite the situation back home. If we all stop doing what we believe in then we will truly be defeated. So deep breathe and here goes: Campus Conversations is an optional extra video that I share at the end of each module in my Coursera online course. The idea is for people around the world to take my course for free, and have a peek into the dialogue we're experiencing on campus at Yale University. Even if you can't come in person, you can share in generating knowledge wherever you are. Module 1 of the course is about researching and formulating your problem statement -- understanding the challenge before you set out to tackle it. In this module I share tips for narrowing in on your challenge, understanding root causes, and mapping out existing solutions. At the end of the module I interview Erik Clemons, a social entrepreneur here in New Haven, about how he got started in tackling the challenge of poverty, racism and social mobility. Erik spoke in person last week at Yale Jackson School of Global Affairs, and is always the first guest entrepreneur in my course at Yale School of Management and Yale School of Public Health. So it only makes sense for him to be the Campus Conversation for the first module in my Yale Online course. He continues to provide hope and evidence that change is possible no matter what.
