For Clifford Bogue, MD, chair of the Department of Pediatrics at Yale Medicine and chief of pediatrics at Yale New Haven Health System, medicine is often about finding pieces of a puzzle and putting them together to answer questions. “Children often can’t tell you what is wrong with them," says Dr. Bogue. "They only know what they are experiencing, and you must use a lot of different cues and clues to figure out what is going on. To me, that’s a fun and exciting challenge,” he says. Dr. Bogue is a national leader in his field, specializing in pediatric critical care, leading a research lab that investigated the #genetic underpinnings of childhood illnesses, and advocating to prevent firearm violence against children. For one retiree, 66, a slipped disc was the worst pain of her life —nothing, not even childbirth, compared to the discomfort in her left thigh. Having an endoscopic discectomy, the least invasive way to treat herniated discs surgically, at Yale Medicine with orthopedic spine surgeon Peter Whang, MD, changed all that. “With a microdiscectomy, the incision is 2 to 3 centimeters; with endoscopic discectomy, it’s a few millimeters," Dr. Whang says. "When you have smaller incisions, there is less pain, minimal scar tissue, and a quicker recovery.” Learn more about endoscopic discectomy for back pain here: https://brnw.ch/21wQLg6

Are your cold symptoms caused by the human metapneumovirus (HMPV)? HMPV is a common respiratory virus, and news reports have been following the rising number of cases in various parts of the world, including the United States. However, HMPV is nothing to panic about and is something most people have already been exposed to in their lives. Typically, HMPV causes a mild upper respiratory infection, but it can also affect the lower respiratory tract and be more serious for infants and people who are immunocompromised.
