  • For many, this is a time of upheaval and uncertainty. Many people are facing job transitions and career shifts, some chosen, some imposed. CBEY's resident fellow and independent coach, Peter Boyd really wants to support people to take as much control of the next step as possible. Peter will provide tools that he has shared with hundreds of Yale students and seasoned executives to help you assess what is important for you in crafting your next position, to get a clearer sense of your purpose, and to create your own distinct (and by-definition-less-crowded) path to get there. CEO/Founder at Cambium | Yale Forestry | Forbes 30 under 30 | TEDx Speaker | Fast Co Most Innovative | TIME Best Invention 2024

7 years ago I walked into the Yale School of Management for the first time as a 22 year old Forestry student--this past week I walked in to teach 100+ first year MBAs about our company. On my first day of gradschool, I wore my NOLS Wilderness Medicine hoodie, and felt completely out of place. I sat in class, decidedly underdressed and nervous--what was I doing here? The first person I talked to had been an executive at Facebook--I had previously been an undergrad student who worked in landscaping. But, she asked me if I wanted to be her peer coach. I said yes, and managed to avoid saying I'd graduated barely a month before--what would I coach her on? As I started to work on Cambium over the next few years, I heard unanimous chorus highlighting why it would not work: "It is too complicated", "you'll never compete on price if your products are also doing good", "you've never built a business before"...etc. And the truth is, at the time I really did not know how to do it. I still don't. Accepting that, accepting that I do not have all the answers, is one of the most important things I've learned. Even though I lacked experience, I still can be a great listener and a great peer coach. In the past, I used to feel deeply insecure about my inexperience, and it would result in me trying to prove myself--that never goes well as a leader! I now know that my effectiveness as a leader comes from my ability to evaluate information, not from having all of it. Cambium now has over 30 employees, and it was surreal to teach a business ops class with the amazing Paul Timmins--I couldn't be more proud to work with and learn from him everyday. Big thank you to Lesley Meng for teaching Marisa Repka and I everything we know about ops and having us back! If you want to learn how building forestry technology relates to Tinder...you'll have to come to the next talk!
