Words from our friends at WoodmenLife North Alabama: Proud to present a WoodmenLife outreach foundation grant to Allie Imaghodor, Executive Director, XVI Birmingham. WL member, and chapter and jurisdiction leader, Paula Bedran said about XVI. This great organization has helped my family in too many ways to list. They reached out during one of our toughest times as a family and got us connected with the specialty doctors and therapists my son needed. She helped us navigate insurance hold ups, medication shortages, and transitioning into the public school system's special education department. She continues to be an advocate for my son and our entire family. The communication boards they install at playgrounds help non-speaking and non-conversational kids, like my son, interact with other children and express their needs and wants in public settings. Allie has helped other families with higher support needs with medical equipment, adaptive bicycles to promote safe exercising and inclusive play, she has even helped offset the cost of bills from must-have therapies! XVI hosts sensory friendly and fully inclusive events in safe environments so that those with higher support needs can attend. (Many of these families typically stay home because events can be too bright, loud, unpredictable, crowded, or even have unaccessible restrooms for older/larger children in need of diaper changes. etc.) Again, there are too many examples to list them all. Mr. Serious Face is ready for a sunny summer break! Hello from Xander Vance Imaghodor. The inspiration behind XVI. Born at 23 weeks, he is now almost 9 years old. The hope, pride, optimism, and faith we have in Xander and his growth are the adjectives we hope to encourage other families with. In the trenches, you often feel like you don’t even want to consider the possibility of what tomorrow may look like. At XVI, our mission is to encourage you to allow those raw feelings a place in the present, and to encourage you with a message for the day ahead. For those living with a disability or experiencing a developmental delay— the world seems small. Nice enough people say all the wrong things, people try to help change a “situation” but that may be your new normal.
