These Harvard students were able to build a system for AR glasses that identifies the people it sees and provides the wearer with their personal details. Now anyone who knows me will know I'm a massive advocate for Augmented Reality, particularly wearable AR like the many new smart glasses now hitting the market. But if a few students can cobble something as powerful and invasive as this together in just a few weeks... well... I think it's time we started talking about safeguards... To put it in perspective, everything you see here is already possible using your webcam or mobile phone, but the difference here is that with both of those you can generally tell if someone is recording you. But as smart glasses become ever more similar in appearance to normal eyewear, it would be possible for a wearer to capture everyone they see without anyone knowing it's even happened. Combine that with AI facial recognition and the massive amounts of easily accessible data available on most of us through social media and you have a recipe for massive privacy intrusion, even fraud. Of course, in a business networking event this type of functionality could be extremely useful (as long as everyone knows and consents to the technology being used there), but out on the street..? This is why organisations like XRSI and the Metaverse Standards Forum exist (and why I'm proud to be an active member of both) - they allow people who are involved in these emerging technologies to pre-emptively identify the potential risks and speak to legislative bodies, governments and the technology companies themselves to put safeguards in place that mitigate harms BEFORE they occur. As inconspicuous XR glasses are still very early in their market adoption (which could ultimately be as massive as smartphones before them) there's still time to establish and legislate for what they are and aren't allowed to do in different situations - and to determine how these restrictions will be achieved and enforced. This pre-emptive approach not only protects you and I, it is also ultimately better for the developing technologies themselves as it avoids the negative publicity and knee-jerk legislative reactions that bad applications (and subsequent press coverage) inevitably cause, which in turn stunt the uptake and growth of these innovations. At Unanimous AI, we launched our Swarm? platform in 2016, our goal to connect human groups into super-intelligent systems using the power of AI. Below is our latest academic paper performed in collaboration with researchers at Carnegie Mellon and funded by the US Air Force. This new paper just scratches the surface, but shows the benefits of something we’ve been working on for a while – enabling conversational swarms of humans and AI agents as real-time deliberative systems. The study used GPT-4 from OpenAI, but we've also been testing with Gemini from Google and are seeing similar performance when using AI agents to connect large human groups. This study will be presented by our Hans Schumann this Thursday at IBM Watson Research Center (UEMCON 2024). Damascus Steel - a very different type of cutting edge technology... I love learning from old tech, as it teaches us so many lessons for the future This is why I travelled to Yorkshire - with its pedigree of steel manufacture going back to Roman times - to learn about making Damascus Steel. Known to have existed in the middle east for over 2,000 years, this technique combined steels with different properties (hardness, flexibility, durability) to create something which was far stronger, sharper and more beautiful than the sum of its parts. (see the end of this video for evidence of this) In fact one theory for the origin of the name is that the early crusaders witnessed these Damascus (Syrian) swords slicing right through their own. So why is this relevant to modern technology? With humanoid robots, Augmented Reality glasses and AI user interfaces making the biggest waves right now, the answer is becoming increasingly obvious... - maximising the possibilities of the NEW with the learnings and capabilities of the OLD Robots use the flexibility of the humanoid form (particularly the hand) to create a machine capable of many, many different tasks - humans are far from the fastest, strongest or most resilient species - but we sure are adaptable. Augmented Reality glasses leverage the visual, auditory and spatial senses with which we naturally interact with the world to make for a much more intuitive user interface than a smartphone (while leaving those all-important hands free for physical interaction). AI user interfaces again allow us to use natural written and spoken language to interact more easily with the myriad capabilities of digital technolgy, without the traditional barriers of having to learn each ones' specific user interface. Just as Damascus steel combined the properties of the old and the new to create something far more than the sum of its parts, so too are we merging the capabilities of modern technology with the learnings and strengths of the age old human experience to create a blending of humanity and technology. This is a great read and an area of research/learning for me as well. Specifically I'm focused on how #MachineUnlearning can advance privacy and ethical AI within my #3Cprivacy framework (Context, Choice, Control?). What's pretty cool about this is the ability to have models forget specific data w/o a performance hit and having that align with giving users more control over their data privacy, ensuring compliance, and driving transparency in AI systems. Kush Varshney and team may not know this but earlier this year this came up on a Mixture of experts episode and it got my mind churning on how this ties into my rai-toolkit and bringing this to real-world clients who will be facing #DataPrivacy compliance challenges with AI! Below is my latest piece in Big Think entitled "?????? ????????????????????????" about the future of mobile computing, artificial intelligence, and augmented reality. Spoiler alert - I argue that the future of mobile computing will be devices that pump AI-powered voices into our ears throughout our daily lives. I believe these will be useful products, but I also warn that policymakers need to quickly focus on the risks because these technologies are coming fast. Unfortunately, most policymakers (and journalists) fixate on the privacy risks of wearable devices because they are familiar with those threats. The far bigger risks will be threats to human agency. When AI systems mediated by third parties are whispering in our ears all day, privacy risks will seem quaint.
