Its that time of year again... our MSc Serious Games & VR students are now preparing and planning for their summer research projects - and we welcome project briefs and ideas from anyone interested in mentoring or advising a project! Minimal time commitment - and all we need to kick it off is a project title and sentence or two to outline the project idea. From exploring the impact of physical interaction in VR, to games exploring Islamic art and culture, to forensic investigations, you can see some examples of recent projects here: https://lnkd.in/dKiNWVaa Just drop me a line if you want to know more, or would like to suggest a project!

??? Snap Inc.'s Spectacles now support GPS and a virtual keyboard. Why is this so interesting? For starters, Google *might* be falling behind: These are such simple features, but they represent A LOT. First of all, one of the major applications of AR glasses in the future, will be navigation. That's one of the reasons why AR on Google Maps is something so interesting. Businesses in the future will want to advertise as well, but this time ads will become spatial (something I've been talking about for nearly 5 years now?). And this will be one of the biggest revenue opportunities of immersive devices ever. Of course, Google with its already existing amazing family of apps like Google Maps and now Waze, is the favorite to take that opportunity. However, we have not heard officially of AR glasses from Google just yet, rather just Android XR. At the same time, now Snap is not just integrating GPS/Keyboard, rather seems to be looking at having their own OS. And having the Spectacles as a standalone device that can run basically everything. Additionally, new fun apps like Peridot for Spectacles, could turn into what Pokémon GO basically missed the opportunity to become (or not yet). Great timing for sure, which comes with a lot of opportunities. What are your thoughts? ==== ?? Testing whether 3D artists should be worried about AI. It's honestly gotten very good (especially Prism: https://3daistudio.com). But modification will remain its biggest hurdle for a long time. Messy meshes mean even small fixes require expensive retopo. It's best at opaque, smooth shapes that are common (cars, people etc) and worst at complex objects with small details (trees etc). One skill that will absolutely be valuable in the future is retopo and texturing. If you want to upskill, learn any photogrammetry cleanup workflow that exists today, because it's essentially the same thing. Or focus on hero assets. Anything close to the camera needs to be accurate, which AI isn't. Game assets also have much more complex requirements (UV space, watertight meshes, optimized shaders) that I doubt AI will solve for a while.

Okay wow! ???? I don't know why I haven't seen any post about this in my timeline yet but the most recent hand tracking update from Meta (v74) is bonkers! https://lnkd.in/eU7PKwQB I hope apple is prepared for that. ?? It works so robust and even when my hand is in a lower position. Looks like they also improved and fine tuned the hand animations to look more realistic and natural. Just wow! ?? Download the apk in the comments ?? to try it yourself on Quest Pro, Quest 3 and above. Make sure to update your Headset to v74. ? Credits and kudos ?? to the hand tracking team behind it at Meta. Thanks also for such a good journey in unity. It took me basically 5 mins to update the SDK, add passthrough via building blocks and test the scene on Quest 3. WOWOWOWW ?? Will prototype future AR smartglass scenarios with it. What a gift! ?? cc Dilmer Valecillos ? ?? GDC Basti Schütz

Meta just unveiled the next evolution of Project Aria, and while these aren’t consumer AR glasses, they’re an exciting glimpse into the future of spatial computing, AI, and robotics. This new research hardware has some fascinating updates: ?? More powerful sensors – Higher-res cameras, an improved depth sensor, and advanced IMU for better spatial awareness ?? Custom-built Qualcomm chip – Boosts on-device AI processing for real-time egocentric research ?? Tighter integration with AI & robotics – Paving the way for AI-powered spatial experiences ?? New design & improved comfort – Sleeker form factor for long-term use While these are not AR consumer glasses, they showcase tech that could easily find its way into future Meta XR headsets. Enhanced AI-powered scene understanding, improved hand tracking, and real-world object interaction are all stepping stones toward the next generation of AI-infused AR experiences. This is another sign that Meta is playing the long game with AR—bridging AI, XR, and robotics to push spatial computing forward. Exciting times ahead! What do you think? Could AI-powered vision be a game-changer for future XR devices? #Meta #ProjectAria #AugmentedReality #XR #AI #SpatialComputing

The challenges in deploying VR when the landscape and terms keep changing are often unpredictable and show-stopping, making it too unreliable for many orgs to bother investing in... this is a prime example of Meta increasing barriers to adoption. Has anyone else been affected by HMS?

A year ago, my education rep at Meta acknowledged past missteps, saying, “Mark’s trying to make right with the education sector and win back trust.” Last week, that trust was shattered. While prepping 40 Quest 3 headsets for an event, I received an email from ArborXR the popular third-party management platform I chose over Quest for Business. Despite my active contract with them, I was informed that continued use of their services would now require an additional payment to Meta for its new Horizon Managed Services (HMS) licenses—effectively rendering my existing licenses useless unless I paid thousands more. Other vendors, including ManageXR issued similar statements, all signaling the same message: Meta had implemented a mandatory paywall for managing headsets, blindsiding institutions like mine. With only 24 hours before deployment, my team had to factory reset all 40 headsets and reconfigure them from scratch. We pulled it off, and the event was a success. But this experience has fundamentally changed my stance on VR in education. I once saw it as uncertain and unproven; now, I see it as unpredictable and, at times, even risky for institutions that invest in the technology without clear long-term assurances. Despite continued missteps made by commercial interests, I believe VR still has a role and pedagogical value in education. Nevertheless, VR companies need the education sector—the education sector doesn’t need VR. I’m actively in discussions with colleagues across higher ed and K-12 to navigate this shifting landscape. If you’ve been affected by the HMS rollout, let’s connect and share thoughts and experiences.

??Imagine forming an argument for a classroom debate that requires you to compare and contrast two university classrooms set in 1940s era in two different countries .. and being able to experience being in the classroom with your classmates and teacher while you review the research needed for your argument. That is the power of IVR classrooms enhanced by teaching presence. I'm having so much fun designing a demonstration for an IVR classroom lesson that enhances teaching presence! This learning space will be featured next Wednesday (2/26) at the XR in LXD Meetup. [Access via headset or laptop.] What is happening? - The scene showcases a 1940s U.S. astronomy classroom, where students are learning how radar technology is used to map planetary surfaces, predicting eclipses using experiments. Across the way, there's another classroom—offering an immersive step into a 1940s Japanese astronomy classroom, highlighting the differences in teaching methods and technology of the time. Why the 1940s? - The 1940s marked the beginning of inquiry-based learning (IBL) in U.S. universities, and having Albert Einstein as my teacher was a highlight. He was an early adopter of IBL principles, emphasizing that learning should be driven by curiosity and critical thinking. As he said, “The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing,” and "Education is not the learning of facts, but the training of the mind to think.”
