New York Attorney General Letitia James has filed a lawsuit against National General and its parent company, Allstate Insurance, alleging failure to protect consumers' personal information. The suit stems from two data breaches in 2020 and 2021 that exposed the driver's license numbers of over 165,000 New Yorkers. The first breach went undetected for two months, compromising nearly 12,000 individuals, including more than 9,100 New Yorkers. Following this, a second, larger breach occurred, affecting an additional 187,000 consumers, with approximately 155,000 being New Yorkers. The Attorney General's Office asserts that National General failed to implement reasonable data security measures and neglected to notify affected consumers or state agencies after the initial breach, leading to the subsequent larger breach This case is a wake-up call for businesses handling sensitive data—security failures can lead to legal and reputational damage.
