We had an incredible time at CASEL (Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning)’s SEL Exchange, diving into fresh perspectives and practical strategies to bring SEL to life in high school and beyond! ?
From research to real-world application, we saw what true integration of SEL and academics looks like and how it can be done.
We heard from Dr. Sara Rimm-Kaufman, University of Virginia that “Kids are constantly learning, and SEL makes those experiences intentional... Plus when students’ SEL needs are met, they’re more likely to engage in learning—and engaged students are more likely to succeed.” ?? ??
Takeaway: SEL *is* academic content. And not only is SEL crucial for classrooms, it’s a framework for life.
During XQ's featured session, principals, teachers, and SEL leads joined our very own Michele Cahill, Mary Ryerse, Lauren J. Bierbaum, and Ali Berry to design learning experiences using the XQ Competencies. Each activity was packed with meaningful SEL and academic skills.
?? As Mary Ryerse shared, "the true measure of success is student engagement." One of the best ways to achieve this is by starting lessons with a ‘hook’—that resonates with students’ interests.
In a mini design sprint, our session attendees came up with enticing hooks and brought the competencies to life, designing sample Learning Experiences like a world history class-turned-multidisciplinary project on community mobilization to support refugees—a real example of integrating SEL and academic content in action.
Our session attendees were inspired by “The First Class”—a great example of how a school got comfortable with being uncomfortable—integrating SEL and academics with the XQ competencies. Watch at ?? https://TheFirstClass.org.
But how can every community make this a reality, you ask?
High school transformation is all about setting students up to thrive as independent adults. A resounding theme we heard today from panelists and attendees alike is to make the impact of SEL clear: real skills, real growth, real readiness for life beyond the classroom! When students understand how SEL connects to their future, it’s a powerful motivator!
