Today, XL Batteries shipped their first commercial unit to Houston. It's a milestone in their quest to solve a $4 trillion problem: grid-scale energy storage. The story began in 2019 at Columbia University, when Thomas Sisto and his team made an unexpected discovery: They found organic molecules that never degraded during charge-discharge cycles. This wasn't just another battery breakthrough. It was the foundation for: → 50+ year battery life → Non-flammable chemistry → Grid-scale storage capability → Significantly lower costs than current solutions But Sisto knew technical innovation wasn't enough. He assembled an elite team including: → Co-founder/CTO of A123 Systems (largest battery IPO of 2009) → Pfizer's EVP of global chemical manufacturing → VP of Engineering from Plug Power Their approach? Don't reinvent the wheel. Instead of creating new battery architecture, they improved an existing one: → Took NASA's 50-year-old flow battery design → Replaced expensive vanadium/sulfuric acid → Used organic molecules in saltwater instead The result: a battery that can store energy for 12-100 hours. (For context: lithium batteries max out at 8 hours) After raising $20M, they're now moving from lab to field: → First unit shipped today → Already finding unexpected challenges → Learning more in days than months in the lab Their vision: transform energy infrastructure the same way oil and gas did.
