Later, we explored Ghent with Charlie Tours’ True or False Tour, uncovering fun facts that even surprised the locals! After a full day of exploring, we enjoyed a cozy aperitif at Bar Bougie in the iconic Wintercircus Ghent, before wrapping it all up with an amazing dinner at Komparto, sharing laughs, stories, and fantastic food. ????? ? ?? ?? Exciting times ??! Luna Maris and her co-authors just published their paper "Method for Co-Registration of High-Resolution Specimen PET-CT with Histopathology to Improve Insight into Radiotracer Distributions" in #EJNNM Physics! In this paper, they present a method to accurately align high-resolution PET-CT images of excised breast tumors with histopathology. This automatic approach aims to deepen understanding of radiotracer distributions across different tissue types at high spatial resolution. Key-findings: 1?? Achieved accurate alignment, even for highly deformable breast tissue. 2?? Collected a unique dataset of co-registered 18F-FDG micro-PET-CT and histopathology images, detailing radiotracer uptake in breast tumors. 3?? Found that not only common NST tumors but also more rare subtypes, like ILC and DCIS, generally show higher uptake than healthy tissue in micro-PET. ? ?? Their method could extend to studying other tumor types and radiotracers. Back from an incredible experience at the IEEE NSS MIC RTSD conference in Tampa! ?? Gert Van Hoey, Tom Van Quaethem, Luna Maris, and I are still recharging after a packed schedule of short courses, workshops, sessions on hardware and software research and many discussions at the poster sessions.?? During the conference talks, I was reminded of my days working as a hardware engineer, designing, testing and benchmarking the PET detectors of the XEOS AURA 10 PET-CT. While I absolutely love leading the R&D team, which brings new challenges and opportunities, there’s something energizing about reconnecting with the hands-on side of medical imaging innovation.?? Two personal highlights of the conference were an inspiring plenary session by Richard Carson and the opportunity to engage with fellow engineers in medical imaging as they presented their research posters. And, of course, the standout poster was the one from Luna Maris!? ???? #XEOS #IEEE #IEEEMIC2024
