We couldn't round off our series of LGBT+ STEM icons without recognizing the father of modern computing Alan Turing. ? Turing famously played his part in the allied victory over Nazi Germany in WW2, breaking the Enigma messages on an industrial scale. ? Following the war, Turing produced a detailed design for what was called the Automatic Computing Engine (ACE.) This device introduced the concept of a digital computer in the modern sense, capable of storing programs in its memory. His report highlighted the vast potential of this technological breakthrough and anticipated software advancements that were ahead of parallel developments in the United States. ? His focus in the 1950's turned to whether or not a computer could rival human thinking, and he published a philosophical paper including the idea of an 'imitation game' - a key contribution to the field of AI. ? Turing was convicted for gross indecency in 1952 after an affair with another man was brought to the attention of the police, he was chemically castrated and in 1954 was found dead after ingesting cyanide. ? In 2013 he was posthumously granted a royal pardon, and now features on the new ￡50 note, a celebration of his achievements and the values he symbolizes. #alanturing #computing #enigma #lgbtqicons

Alan L. Hart was a pioneering 20th-century physician, radiologist, and author who played a key role in advancing the use of x-rays for the early detection of tuberculosis. In the later years of his career, he worked with the Connecticut Tuberculosis Commission, helping to expand public health screenings and services across the state. Hart’s research and early use of radiology to detect tuberculosis allowed the infected to get earlier treatment and prevented many others from getting and spreading the disease. ? Hart was also one of the first individuals in the United States to undergo gender affirmation surgery. Though Hart did not identify as "transgender"—a term that was not coined until the 1960s—his life aligns with the ongoing history of trans and nonbinary individuals. After transitioning in 1917, Hart faced persistent gender discrimination and the constant threat of being outed to his patients and community, all while navigating the challenges of a society that was less accepting of his gender identity. ? #LGBTHistory #GenderAffirmation #MedicalPioneer #AlanLHart #tuberculosis
