Hot wires are the primary conductors of electricity, delivering power from the main source to outlets, appliances, lights, and other devices. Hot vs. Neutral vs. Ground Wires Think of your electrical system as a complete circuit: ?? Hot wires: deliver the power. ?? Neutral wires: provide the return path back to the source. ?? Ground wires: safely redirecting electricity if something goes wrong. Color ?? Black: standard color for hot wires in residential and commercial wiring. ?? Red: used as a secondary hot wire in setups like three-way switches or 240-volt applications. ?? Blue and yellow: occasionally used as hot wires, though this is less common. Dangers Hot wires carry electrical current and, if touched, can cause severe injury or even fatal electrocution. Electric shock can cause sudden balance loss when working on ladders, leading to falls. Faulty wiring, improper insulation, or damaged insulation can cause hot wires to spark, leading to fires. Safety A voltage tester or meter, often called a “hot stick,” is a specialized tool designed to safely detect live wires from a distance. Hot sticks detect electric fields, helping users identify live wires without contact and reducing electric shock risk. Best Practices 1?? Inspect the hot stick before each use. 2?? Always wear protective gear when working with electrical systems. 3?? Test the hot stick on a known live source to ensure it works. 4?? Store the hot stick properly after use to maintain its functionality. Learn more about hot wires:

Don’t let the cold stop you from getting the job done. Here are five tips for tradesmen to stay warm on construction sites this winter. 1?? Layers Staying warm starts with layering. Use three essential layers: - Base layer (underwear): moisture-wicking thermals to keep sweat away - Middle layer (insulation): retains body heat - Outer layer (shell): protects from wind, rain, and snow 2?? Head and feet protection Don’t underestimate the power of a good beanie to keep your head warm when it’s cold. Similarly, don’t forget insulated boots and moisture-wicking socks. Dry feet are warm feet. 3?? Protective gloves Your hands are your most used tool - keep them warm. Lightweight, insulated gloves can maintain warmth without impairing dexterity. When taking breaks, use glove liners and mittens for added warmth. 4?? Hand warmers Gloves are crucial but not always ideal for every task. Consider pocket hand warmers for extra heat when you can’t wear gloves. 5?? Stay fueled Your body uses extra energy to stay warm in cold weather. Pack high-protein snacks to keep your energy up all day. BONUS TIP ?? Keep extras in your vehicle. You can’t always predict the weather. Stock your car with extra: - Socks and shoes - Gloves - Shirts - Jackets for different conditions Staying warm on the job is a challenge. Follow these tips for a better, warmer workday.
