Researchers at the Wyss Institute and collaborating institutions moved the needle on using extracellular vesicles (EVs) as a rich source of biomarkers for Parkinson’s Disease and other disorders of the brain and other organs. By advancing their “liquid biopsy” platform, they developed the ability to, for the first time, exactly answer the simple but challenging question of what portion of a given protein present in blood plasma is actually inside of EVs relative to outside. 关于我们
At the Wyss Institute, we leverage recent insights into how Nature builds, controls and manufactures to develop new engineering innovations - a new field of research we call Biologically Inspired Engineering. Our scientists, engineers and clinicians, who come from Harvard's Schools of Medicine, Engineering, Arts & Sciences, Design, and Education as well as 12 collaborating academic institutions and hospitals, work alongside staff with industrial experience in product development to engineer transformative solutions to some of the world’s greatest problems. By emulating biological principles of self assembly, organization and regulation, we are developing disruptive technology solutions for healthcare, energy, architecture, robotics, and manufacturing, which are translated into commercial products and therapies through formation of new startups and corporate alliances.

Gozde Basara has never shied away from learning something new. From starting a Ph.D. in 3D Bioprinting as a mechanical engineer with no advanced knowledge of biology to taking on new artistic endeavors like crocheting, watercolor painting, and singing, she doesn’t back down from a challenge. The latest one? Developing a technology to help cancer survivors safely feel whole again following mastectomies. As part of the ReConstruct team, she’s refining a way to make vascularized tissue from a patient’s cells for safer reconstruction surgeries. Learn more about Gozde and her work in this month’s Humans of the Wyss. #HOWyss?#WomensHealth #CancerSolutions #3DPrinting #Bioprinting https://lnkd.in/eawgTP6P

Researchers at the Wyss Institute and Harvard SEAS developed a new type of catalytic material that dramatically lowers the cost of cleaning air. This new material, inspired by the honeycomb-like nanostructure of butterfly wings, is applicable to many industries and settings, including high-temperature chemistry, home and commercial HVAC, transportation, manufacturing, pharma, and agriculture. This technology is available for licensing. #Sustainability #AirPollution #CleanAir https://lnkd.in/gEuyUxmB
