Attending the Second International Rethinking Mental Health Care Conference Human Rights in Mental Health-FGIP, in Colombo was deeply inspiring. The conference brought together leaders in mental health, and I’m grateful for the chance to connect with like-minded individuals. A standout moment was commemorating Sally Hulugalle, a fierce lioness whose legacy continues to inspire. Her work with Nest Sri Lanka taught me that real change comes from fierce compassion, standing up for those without a voice, and making a difference one step at a time. Key takeaways for me from the conference: Youth Mental Health: Involve young people in mental health programs to make them more sustainable and impactful. Collaboration across sectors is key. Need for Speaking truth to power, disrupting oppressive systems, and reimagining abolitionist futures. Mental health research has often been rooted in colonial inquiry & maintains harmful power dynamics. Disrupt these systems and move beyond tokenism to create true change Cultural Sensitivity: Ethnic matching and cultural competency are vital for effective care, ensuring services are culturally appropriate and build trust. Art and Visual Psychology: Creative methods can deepen our understanding of mental health, engaging communities in ways that reflect their experiences and inform interventions. AI + Human Care: AI combined with human care is vital for breaking down gated access to mental health services, making support more accessible and affordable. When paired with community engagement and training of trainers (TOT), AI helps extend reach, amplifies voices, and empowers communities, while still maintaining the compassionate human touch that’s essential in care. Global South’s Rise: Despite challenges like workforce shortages and funding gaps, countries in the Global South are embracing digital mental health and showing how resilience, innovation, and collaboration drive success. Sri Lanka, with its resilient history of overcoming civil war and terrorism, was the perfect venue for this conference, made even more special by the humble presence of Prime Minister Dr.Harini Amarasuriya =compassionate leadership. This conference reaffirmed that we are part of a global movement—all working towards the same goal: making mental health care accessible, ethical, and innovative, also Wysa's vision and mission statement. I am glad to have met Sally in her daughters, friends and colleagues-in their spirit and work continue to inspire change in countless lives. Grateful to Wysa founders & my mentors Jo Aggarwal Ramakant Vempati for their trust and providing opportunities to learn &grow. India1... India2... India unlimited? It was cool to see Wysa featured in Blume Ventures' Indus Valley Report for those who need "easy, reliable access to high quality mental healthcare.” Reaffirms our belief that mental health can (and should) be as accessible as possible for those who seek it out. But what about those who don't seek it out? India2 needs a different framing. There, mental health often needs a softer entry point, free from the weight of clinical labels. It’s more acceptable for someone to turn to “astrology counseling” or stress-busting sessions that don’t call it “therapy.” ~ My journey over the last 2 years has validated the same, in bridging the mental health care gap for low-resource settings (neat plug: https://lnkd.in/g7Fe8urH). ? We’re bringing wellbeing to underserved communities and especially young people, partnering with grassroots orgs & state governments, and reframing this life-saving intervention as life skills, resilience, or personal growth. This approach is starting to resonate! ?? When stigma is high, sometimes the path to care isn’t straightforward. Sometimes it’s a skill-building workshop, or a friendly chatbot that quietly teaches a girl how to seek permission from her parents. The key is meeting people where they are, and letting them define what mental well-being looks like. ~ Big thanks to Sajith Pai, Anurag Pagaria, and team for doing this yearly! What a delightfully rich read, and a perfect starting point for anyone building solutions for India in all its complexity: https://lnkd.in/gyst3-C4
