This week, Wyman TOP teens from the Ferguson-Florissant School District had the opportunity to expand their Community Service Learning skills by volunteering at L'Arche St. Louis, an independent living program for adults with disabilities. The 6th graders helped with a variety of projects at the L’Arche community center in Brentwood, including sorting and organizing craft supplies and t-shirts, baking cookies, and spring cleanup of the grounds. Engaging with their communities through community service projects and discovering how they can make a difference in the lives of others is just one way that Wyman TOP Teens build their social-emotional skills, developing a positive sense of self, and making a difference in the community! #Wyman #WymanTeensWill #WymanTOP #CommunityService

The core of our work at Wyman is to partner with young people to help them achieve educational and career success, life and leadership skills, and healthy behaviors and relationships. Each of our three programs, though different, include the experiences young people need to reach these goals. Helping teens build their life and leadership skills is especially important in our Teen Connection Project (TCP) which offers lessons designed to help participants develop skills like problem solving, communication, decision making, and empathy – all of which contribute to academic and life success. Week by week, TCP participants share their personal experiences and learn how to solve problems, communicate effectively, and build healthy, sustainable connections with others. TCP Lesson #4 is all about conflict and communications. The participants reflect on how they’d like a friend to respond when coming to them with a problem, and some helpful, and maybe not so helpful, ways people respond. They discuss ways to be a more supportive listener and they explore how their responses to conflict could impact connections with others- it can be a barrier, or it can serve as a tool to deepen those connections. This lesson, and more are critical to helping TCP participants build life and leadership skills that will positively impact their academic engagement, success after high school, and overall wellbeing.
